Review: Apple Watch Series 5, the first with an always-on screen

Apple's new smartwatch was introduced to the world on September 10 and hit the market on September 20. We, of course, quickly put our hands on the clock and, after a period of testing, we are here to give our full verdict on the Apple Watch Series 5.

The reviews of always start from a comparative basis. And this base is obviously the product of the previous generation in this case, the Apple Watch Series 4. Last year, when the Series 4 came into the world, the company first changed the design of the watch. It wasn't a huge change, but enough to make it more harmonious, with more rounded corners, new sizes (40mm and 44mm instead of the old 38mm and 42mm) and a much better performance than previous generations.

Fortunately, even with this change, bracelets (both those created by Apple and those by partner companies) remain compatible with all generations in this sense, with no cause for concern.

I am repeating this story for one simple reason: now, in 2019, with the arrival of the Apple Watch Series 5, the watch design has remained exactly the same. Looking at a Series 5 and a Series 4, it is impossible to distinguish which one is not, of course, in the Edition model (more on this below).

And the similarities weren't just visual. As you will see below, much has remained unchanged, which makes me conclude that the Apple Watch Series 5 was a timid leap from the Series 4; Taking iPhone as a parameter, I would even say that this was a minor upgrade than we see when Apple releases an "S" line.

Design

Basically, as I said, nothing has changed here. We have a box with the same size, the same screen, the same thickness (10.7mm), speakers and microphone positioned in the same places with the same capacities, the back made of ceramics with the same sensors. .

New materials

What we have again are two materials, which came to make up the Edition line: titanium and ceramics.

While the first is something really new, never used before by Apple in the creation of a watch, the second already showed up at the time of the Series 3 2 and then ceased to exist in the 4.

Titanium is a material that, depending on the treatment, may be visually very similar to stainless steel. But Apple has chosen to make it look more “brushed” on the watch, while the steel model is quite bright. This greatly differentiated their look on the silver-box model as it was no longer dark, undeniable that they looked very similar.

Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, but has twice the strength in proportion to weight, and although the watch case has many other components that are shared among all models, this difference translates into total weight, yes:

ModelAluminum Stainless

Titanium Ceramics
40mm Apple Watch Series 4 30.1g 39.8g
44mm Apple Watch Series 4 36.7g 47.9g
40mm Apple Watch Series 5 30.8g 40.6g 35.1g 39.7g
44mm Apple Watch Series 5 36.5g 47.8g 41.7g 46.7g

Note also that the aluminum model was slightly heavier, while the stainless steel remained at the same level as in the Series 4.

Always Active Retina Screen

Here, yes, we have a very significant change and that is by far the main selling point for the watch. I speak of Always Active Retina Screen.

With it, you no longer have to raise your fist or touch the screen to see the time or other information on the display. Just take a look and you will always find the time or the metrics of your exercises. That is, Apple Watch now behaves like any other analog / digital clock, so you can view the time and information all the time.

But to make this possible, Apple had to do a bit of engineering after all, simply putting a screen that is always on would make the watch's battery “melt”. What was the solution?

The screen brightness decreases when you lower your arm; On the other hand, the most important information is always visible, such as hour and minute hands (in the case of an analogue dial). Touch or raise your hand and the display will light up completely again.

Another "trick" Apple uses to save battery power: while the display is idle, the refresh rate goes from 60Hz to just 1Hz in practice, changes nothing at all in the user experience.

When you receive a notification, it does not appear on the screen when your wrist is resting. You are warned by an audible alert (if sound is on) and / or a vibration. You necessarily have to touch the screen or raise your fist for the notification to appear (a behavior we are already used to, as that was how it worked until Series 4).

In particular, the screen behavior of “old” Apple Watches didn't bother me. But it is undeniable that the possibility of you simply "peeking" at the clock and being able to view the necessary information without having to raise your fist is very useful especially in certain situations, such as when exercising, driving, holding something on the bus / subway, etc.

Moreover, the display remains the same in its specifications, with an OLED screen (now LTPO to be always active), with Force Touch (pressure support) and up to 1,000 nits of brightness.

On X glass vs. sapphire crystal

Remember that in the case of the Apple Apple Watch, Ma continues to use on X glass; In stainless steel, titanium and ceramic models, we have sapphire crystal, a material that is much more resistant to scratches and even cracking.

The problem that Watch is obviously in our fist is a very easy place to bump / hit basically anywhere. So here is my criticism: Apple needs to abandon this glass in favor of sapphire crystal also in the aluminum model, since scratching or even breaking it is a relatively easy task.

S5 chip and compass

The Apple Watch Series 5 comes with the S5, one System in Package (SiP) complete. on this chip are all the watch components, including one of the few new features of the Series 5: a compass.

The new watch comes with an integrated compass so you can orient yourself by the watch dial. If anyone really wants to use a compass on the dial well, the other story. The iPhone has a compass from the original 3GS model, and I count on one hand the times I opened this app on my smartphone.

But if you are a boy scout is a person who liked the idea and wants to use the compass, please be aware that in addition to pointing you in the way, the app tells you the slope, elevation, latitude and longitude.

And for you that, just like me, you don't want to use, it's nice to know that the compass plays an important role in the clock as it helps the Maps app show your direction.

The S5, however, brings no major performance change compared to the S4. Everything remains the same in this sense, which is not bad news, as the performance of the Series 4 is optimal. You are unlikely to have any performance issues. And it works very well for everything you set out to do, and you won't suffer from slowness or anything, that's pretty much right.

And the battery? And the BATTERY ?!

Here we have the first polemic. Any layperson knows that a significant change like this (from a screen that used to be mostly blank to one that is always active) has some impact on the battery.

Apple, however, insists that both the Series 4 and 5 have 18 hours of battery life, which in practice is a full day of use as normal people sleep at least 6 hours a night. The problem that the promise does not prove, at least for the moment, true.

I say “at least for now” for one important reason: the company is already testing watchOS 6.1, which according to some developer / beta tester reports, greatly improves the watch's battery consumption, leaving it on an equal footing. Series 4 (or closer to it).

Today, however, as I write this article, the battery has a much lower performance than the Series 4. It's tricky to crack numbers here because the way each one uses the watch is quite different. But I like to illustrate this higher consumption as follows: without exercise, Apple Watch Series 5 running watchOS 6.0.1 has the same battery consumption as Series 4 monitoring some activity for 1h30 or 2h. At the end of the day, even with these quite different usage scenarios, you will have the same battery percentage on both watches.

  • End of the day without a workout with the Apple Watch Series 5: 35-45% battery
  • End of the day exercising (1h30) with Apple Watch Series 5: 25-35% battery

And, like last year, Apple Watch's battery life is something that directly interferes with what the watch can do. We follow, for example, rumors that sleep monitoring would arrive this year even a "leak" confirmed that the plan exists within Apple, but probably because of battery performance, the company chose to postpone it.

Of course you can make some adjustments to the Apple Watch Series 5, such as turning off the always-on screen feature. But if you choose to do so, upgrading to the new generation simply did not need to be done as you turn off the watch's main news.

In this sense, Apple has failed to do as it did in the new iPhones and has put bigger batteries in all new smartphones, offering up to 5 hours more battery life in the 11 Pro Max. The way to hope that watchOS 6.1 really brings improvements in this direction to owners of Apple Watch Series 5.

Sensors, Digital Crown and more

The scenario here is very similar to the Series 4: we have GPS / GNSS, barometric altimeter, electric heart sensor (famous ECG, which is not yet available in Brazil), second generation optical heart sensor, accelerometer, gyro, ambient light, Bluetooth 5.0, W3 wireless chip, Digital Crown (with response generated by Taptic engine, simulating the sound and feel of a crown of an analog watch), speakers, microphone all remain the same.

As with past generation watches, you can also make payments with your Apple Pay credit card and, as I always like to reinforce, Apple Pay looks like it was made for the clock because of the convenience / ease of pressing the button. side twice and bring Watch closer to the payment terminal.

The annoying part is that, until today, the history of payments made by the watch does not appear in the iPhone Wallet app, which makes it difficult to control spending.

Instead of 16GB, 32GB!

In the Apple Watch Series 3, cellular connectivity watches had 16GB of storage space and GPS 8GB; In the Series 4, Apple put 16GB on all models; Now, in Series 5, we have 32GB in all.

This is good / important for several reasons, especially those who have a GPS model and like to practice exercises like me. Here's this scenario: I really enjoy running without the iPhone, just with Apple Watch and AirPods. If I had an Apple Watch (GPS + Cellular), I wouldn't have to worry about that as I would have access to the Apple Music catalog in a good way. But not my case.

Now, with 32GB of space, I can put twice the music on the clock and stay weeks / months without having to renew the music and playlists synchronized, something that should soon be impossible for Spotify users too.

Even if you do not run / knit and do not care to put so many songs on the clock, this space also serves you to store podcasts and photos, which can be used in the display. that high ever: the more space, the better!

Connectivity

The most important change involves Apple Watches sold in the United States. I refer to LTE and UMTS support (on GPS + Cellular models, of course) as well as support for 2.4GHz 802.11b / g / n Wi-Fi networks.

As we reported, for the first time the American models (A2094 / 40mm and A2095 / 44mm) are compatible with the Brazilian 4G even though the homologated models in Brazil are the same marketed by Apple in Europe / Asia (A2156 / 40mm and A2157 / 44mm). .

<img data-attachment-id = "681728" data-permalink = "https://.uol/post/2019/10/25/review-apple-watch-series-5-o-first- com-one-screen-always-active / 25-connectivity / "data-orig-file =" https://.uol/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/25- connectivity.jpg "data-orig-size =" 2332,2260 "data-comments-opened =" 1 "data-image-meta =" {"aperture": "0", "credit": "", "camera" : "", "caption": "", "created_timestamp": "0", "copyright": "", "focal_length": "0", "iso": "0", "shutter_speed": "0", "title": "", "orientation": "0"} "data-image-title =" Apple Watch Series 5 GPS + Cellular "data-image-description ="

Official Image: https://www.apple/apple-watch-series-5/connect/

"data-medium-file =" https://.uol/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/25-connectivity-600×581.jpg "data-large-file =" https: // .uol/wp-content / uploads / 2019/10/25-connectivity-1260×1221.jpg "src =" https://.uol/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/ 25-connectivity-1260×1221.jpg "alt =" Apple Watch Series 5 GPS + Cellular "class =" wp-image-681728 "srcset =" https://.uol/wp-content/uploads/2019 /10/25-connectivity-1260×1221.jpg 1260w, https://.uol/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/25-connectivity-300×291.jpg 300w, https://.uol / wp-content / uploads / 2019/10/25-connectivity-600×581.jpg 600w "sizes =" (max-width: 1260px) 100vw, 1260px "/>

But the truth is that for us Brazilians, it does not matter to buy an American or European model, after all the two have support to the bands 3 (1,800MHz) and 7 (2,600MHz) and none of them support band 28 (700MHz APT).

This means that if you buy an American Apple Watch, you can activate it on the Claro or Vivo network (the two Brazilian partner carriers of Apple in the availability of connection to the watch here) without problems and enjoy 4G connectivity although This should have an even greater impact on the watch battery.

The only most sensitive issue is that, as Apple has not homologated such models in Basil, it is hardly company that will support these models if you have a warranty problem.

Still, this nice differential because many people take a trip to the US to buy the watch. And, considering that Apple still insists on offering only GPS + Cellular models in stainless steel, titanium and ceramic watches, at least the integrated ones will be able to enjoy connectivity in Brazil.

The differentials of the connectivity model involve things like:

  • Use the crab;
  • Send and receive messages through the Messaging app;
  • Make and receive calls through the Phone app;
  • Check the current weather by the Weather app;
  • Track actions on the stock exchange through the Stock Exchange app;
  • Control your HomeKit protocol-connected devices through the Home app;
  • Use all Wi-Fi enabled apps, such as Fetch;
  • Listen to music on Apple Music, on Air (and others) by the Podcasts app.

All of course without your iPhone around!

WatchOS 6 news

WatchOS 6 has gained some interesting news. And the good part about having software news is that they don't necessarily get restricted to the current model.

As always, Apple leverages the arrival of a new system to include new dials. No watchOS are: Mono and Duo Numerals, Degrad, California, Solar Modular and Compact Dial. All of them are available on Apple Watches Series 4 and 5; in Series 1, 2 and 3, only Mono and Duo Numerals landed because of the screen size.

Cycle Tracking

WatchOS 6 Cycle Tracking

We have two news related to health in watchOS 6. The first one is the app Cycle Tracking, which displays information about the menstrual period and offers a broader view of health for women.

Noise

The second new the app Noise, which works in three ways: you can simply open the app so that it reads the noise around you and shows you the decision levels; You can put a complication of the app on your display so that it is constantly monitoring the environment (providing this information visually to you on the clock screen); and by sending you notifications of ambient sound levels that may affect your audio.

WatchOS 6 Noise app settings

For this constant monitoring to work, you need to open the Watch app on the iPhone and on the "My Watch" tab, tap the Noise app, enable the "Ambient Sound Measurements" option and choose the noise limit (decibis) according to your taste.

According to Apple, prolonged exposure to noise below 80 decibels should not affect your audio; Exposure to noise above this can cause permanent damage:

  • 80 decibis: Approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes of exposure per day at this level may cause temporary loss of audio. At this level, the weekly limit is 40 hours.
  • 85 decibis: Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes of exposure per day at this level may cause temporary loss of audio. At this level, the weekly limit is 12 hours and 30 minutes.
  • 90 decibis: Approximately 30 minutes of exposure per day at this level may cause temporary loss of audio. At this level, the weekly limit is 4 hours.
  • 95 decibis: Only 10 minutes of exposure per day at this level can cause temporary audio loss. At this level, the weekly limit is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • 100 decibis: Even a few minutes of exposure per day at this level can cause temporary loss of audio. At this level, the weekly limit is 20 minutes.

It is worth noting that this measurement made by the watch is extremely accurate, as we have already shown here on the site.

An important point to mention regarding the battery. We have read reports that because of this constant measurement made by the Rudo app, it has some impact on the battery. Some people have chosen to leave this constant measurement off and have had gains in battery life throughout the day. So if you have battery problems, turning off the feature may be a good thing.

Apps Calculator & Recorder

Why it took so long for Apple to put such apps on the watch, I don't know, but now you can use a straight-through calculator to make quick accounts. It's nice that when you press the screen harder with the app open, you have a choice between the “Tip Function” and “Percent” options.

Tip function in the watchOS 6 Calculator app

With the “Percent” option selected, we have traditional calculator access that we know of; In the “Tip Function” you enter a value and by tapping the button you can choose the percentage charged at the location and the number of people who will split the bill. 😉

WatchOS 6 Recorder app

The app Recorder It has no mystery: very simple to use, his arrival is also a hand on the wheel for those who often resort to this type of resource.

WatchOS 6 trends

This new feature shows you increasing or decreasing your metrics over time, including minutes of exercise, running speed, and cardiovascular conditioning. So you know if you keep up the pace or if you need to improve something. Just open the Activity app on your iPhone and view the information.

Emergency SOS

Also new with watchOS 6 and Apple Watch Series 5, the watch can call emergency services almost anywhere in the world (and Brazil is in).

When you make a call using the Emergency SOS feature, Apple Watch automatically calls your local emergency services and shares your location with them.

After an emergency call ends, Apple Watch alerts your emergency contacts with a text message unless you decide to cancel. Apple Watch sends your current location and, for a period after you enter Emergency SOS mode, sends updates when your location changes.

What was left out / could it improve?

It's hard to talk about what was left out, because, in fact, this is information that only Apple knows. But on the basis of rumors, we are almost in a position to imply that the native sleep monitoring feature is that there are several third party apps available on the App Store that do this something that was in the plans but was filed.

In addition to it, every year rumors about a possible non-intrusive glucose meter paint around the steel. This technology, however, is apparently still a bit far away as many people with diabetes dream of something like this.

A lot of people would also like to see new bracelets with extra functions (think of one with extra battery, for example) rumors like that already came up, but they have lost a lot of strength lately.

The truth is that Apple Watch is a great watch, and from the first generation so far, it has evolved a lot covering interesting gaps that were unimaginable in the first model, such as cellular connectivity, always-on display, ECG, among other things.

Prior to the release of the Series 5, I particularly believed only in the arrival of sleep monitoring. And as such a feature requires a better battery, I figured the watch would finally come with autonomy for 2-3 days which would be pretty cool.

I also continue to think that Apple is missing a great opportunity to further integrate the watch with other products such as Macs. I always hit the key that while we're using a computer or even a Ma tablet, notifications of the clock could be shown on the screen of the device in question, avoiding diverting our attention to the wrist.

Nevertheless, I applaud the company for extending the watch's role in unlocking Macs if Apple Watch was previously able to free access to the computer after it came back from the computer. sleepIt is now also possible to override password entry in some cases (such as viewing a locked note or allowing an app to be installed) by simply pressing the Watch side button twice instead of having to enter a password. This kind of integration I like and would like to see more and more!

Prices here in Brazil, as we have said, go from R $ 3,999 (Apple Watch Series 5 GPS 40mm with Aluminum Case) a R $ 12,499 (Apple Watch Edition GPS + Cellular 44mm with Ceramic Case). In the United States, values range from $ 399 to $ 1,499.

Comparatively, the prices are a little lower / at the same level as those practiced by Apple in launching the Apple Watch Series 4 here in Brazil.

With the arrival of the Series 5, Apple chose to discontinue the Series 4 which makes a lot of sense, as they are very similar and let the Series 3 sale, which in Brazil is available from R $ 1,999.

In a nutshell, the main differences between Series 5 and 3 are: bigger, rounder, always-on screen, second-generation optical heart sensor and ECG (still unavailable in Brazil), compass, detecting feature Digital Crown with tactile response, finishes (stainless, titanium and ceramic), storage space, back part made of ceramic instead of composite material, the fastest chip that delivers up to 2x more performance and Bluetooth 5.0.

Worth to buy?

Unlike our review of the iPhone 11 Pro (Max), where we made the point that, for the first time in a long time, previous-generation users may have their beautiful reasons to upgrade, I can't recommend the Apple Watch Series 5 to anyone. have the Series 4.
