Apple, Google, Facebook and others join in an open letter to ask for the protection of young immigrants [atualizado]

We know that the position of Donald Trump in relation to immigrants it is very strict and that, in one of his announcements, the CEO of Apple has already revealed his discontent in this regard.

While the whole world awaits the decision of the American president regarding the program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) which protects young people brought to the United States illegally (so-called “Dreamers” or “dreamers”, in good Portuguese), several CEOs and executives of technology companies signed an open letter so that Trump can preserve the program.

Unless we act now to preserve the DACA program, all 780,000 young workers will lose their permission to work legally in this country and each of them will be at immediate risk of deportation. Our economy would lose $ 460.3 billion of national GDP and $ 24.6 billion in Social Security and Medicare tax contributions. Dreamers are vital to the future of our companies and the economy. With them, we grow and create jobs. They are part of the reason why we will continue to have a global competitive advantage.

Among the big names of executives who signed this open letter are Tim Cook (Apple), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Reed Hastings (Netflix), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Sundar Pichai (Google), Laurene Powell Jobs (Emerson Collective) and several others.

The expectation that Trump today will announce a policy change over DACA, which is likely to be in line with the president's other decisions; that is, it is possible that he ceases to grant work permits to the so-called “dreamers”. If such a change does occur, these young people will be able to remain in the country only until their work licenses expire, and they will no longer be able to renew them.

To reaffirm your position in the face of the facts, Tim Cook published yesterday (3/9) a tweet revealing the number of Apple employees who are under the protection of the DACA program, the so-called "Dreamers" ("Dreamers").

250 of my colleagues at Apple are #Dreamers. I am with them. They deserve our respect as equals and a solution rooted in American values.

Contrary to popular belief, Donald Trump's decision has not yet been revealed, but the president told the press that his desire was to end the program. According to Recode, the decision should be announced tomorrow (9/9).
