Apple today announced a new partnership with the NGO RESOLVES to seek innovative ways to obtain gold responsibly in mining areas. More precisely, Apple will join the program Salmon Gold, created by RESOLVE, together with the American luxury jewelry brand Tiffany.
Since the introduction of Salmon Gold’s efforts in 2017, the NGO has been connecting local miners, environmentalists and government agencies to remedy the damage caused by mining in Alaska and Yukon regions (Canada). Some of the main problems to be solved in the regions are related to the fish reproduction cycle, which has faced the negative consequences of mining activities.
Understanding Apple’s efforts to restore and preserve the environment, the company will dedicate itself to obtaining gold for some of its products even more consciously, supporting miners who participate in the Salmon Gold program or who invest in some way in the restoration mining points in the regions where they work.
According to Apple’s head of supplier responsibility, Paula Pyers, the company aims to encourage sustainable methods of industry evolution, through the RESOLVE initiative.
As we continue to increase our use of recycled materials, we are looking for innovative solutions to obtain gold responsibly. The partnership with Tiffany, a pioneer in sustainable supply, as well as RESOLVE, ensures that Salmon Gold can be an example of how the industry can evolve.
RESOLVE predicts that more than 28 kg of gold will be refined this year in accordance with the program, a considerable increase over last year’s production. In addition, the NGO says it analyzes all the gold used in Apple’s supply chain – from mines to refineries.
