The computer industry sees carbon nanotube transistors as a kind of holy grail. They promise not only faster performance and lower energy consumption than silicon, but a way to prevent the stagnation of processing technology and the death of Moore’s Law. However, its speed in the real world has always lagged behind conventional technology, at least until now. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have created what they say are the first carbon nanotube transistors capable of overcoming modern silicon.
