Yesterday, the project for the creation of a specific domain for adult content on the Internet was approved, which aims to organize the pornography industry under the .xxx sTLD. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the body that manages the introduction of new top-level domains, has already moved forward with negotiations with the ICM Registry – which sponsors this new top-level domain – to resolve technical and pricing issues. for this new domain.

The market for adult websites is currently valued at around $ 12 billion and, depending on ICM plans, «.xxx» addresses may start to be purchased before winter, said Kieran Baker, an ICANN spokesman, in statements to the Associated Press. The new domain was under consideration by the regulatory group, which recently also approved «.jobs» and «.travel» addresses.

ICM intends to charge about $ 60 a year for each «xxx» domain, a cost ten times higher than for other specialized domains. With this project, the company intends to add adult content in an easily identifiable domain that allows greater efficiency of the filtering software and the blocking of access to these sites by children.

However, similarly to what already happens today, it is possible that the porn industry’s adhesion to these domains is not very large, since .com is still the preferred domain for companies and that these adult content sites often play precisely with the confusion in typing addresses to attract new users.
