.Xxx domain must be finally approved

ICANN today approved (finally) the creation of the .xxx domain, intended for addresses of web pages with content for adults – although not mandatory for them.

The information was taken for granted since yesterday at the end of the day after, at a meeting of the body responsible for Internet management, yesterday in Brussels, General Counsel John Jeffrey revealed that the board would probably approve the new domain this Friday.

The proposal has been «on the table» for about 10 years, but the decision has been postponed and rejected successively, with the last attempt to date from March this year.

In an unlikely association, the creation of .xxx faces criticism from part of the porn industry – which fears that it will become mandatory for all sites of its kind and that censorship will be facilitated – and from religious organizations and politicians, concerned with safeguarding morals.

The ICANN board defends the need to approve .xxx, in order to ensure a certain neutrality in the criteria that guide the acceptance of domain names and the possibility for sites with explicit sexual content to choose to use the suffix (self-explanatory).

The final decision has just been made and it is already said that .xxx could become one of the most popular domains. It is estimated that there are currently about 370 million pornography sites, if everyone adhered to the new designation they would surpass the «champion» .com. In March, when the domain completed 25 years of existence, it had 80 million registered sites.

Editorial note: The news has been updated, as the domain has just been approved. Note, however, that .xxx sites will not start appearing yet. First, the business model proposed by the company responsible for the domain needs to be reviewed by ICANN, which should only happen in December.
