.Xxx Domain Decision Postponed Again at ICANN (Updated)

The assignment of a specific domain to host pornographic sites has once again been postponed, with ICANN scheduling the dossier discussion for the next meeting. Vint Cerf, president of the organization that manages the Internet domains, changed the agenda for last Thursday’s meeting, saying that more time will be needed to analyze the dossier regarding the .xxx domain.

In August, ICANN had postponed the decision on the creation of the new top-level domain in the face of public opposition from various organizations and even from the US administration. The Swedish Government and the Vatican State have already formally communicated their opposition to the creation of the new top-level domain, claiming the first that pornography is incompatible with the gender equality defended by Sweden, while the Vatican claims that this top-level domain raises questions ethics contrary to the principles defended by the Geneva Declaration.

However, the European Commission itself seems to have joined the opponents of the project to create .xxx addresses. Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for the Information Society, reportedly told the ICANN president that EU representatives could withdraw from the body unless this project was abandoned, says the information website Vnunet today.

The proposal to create the new top-level domain had been pre-approved by ICANN in June, with the domain management being assigned to the ICM Registry, but in the meantime the dossier has been growing, particularly with the opposition of major entities.

The United States Department of Commerce received more than 6,000 letters and emails to protest against the creation of an area reserved for pornography on the Internet, mainly because it is feared that it will increase the interest of users.
