Xiaomi has announced the new version of Mimoji, its platform for creating custom 3D avatars. The news comes with the launch of the Mi CC9 handset line. The dolls, however, have been the subject of another controversy with Apple, which already has the so-called Memoji, service similar to the recently announced by the Chinese brand. According to Lao Wei, CC line product manager, Mimoji has over 165 haircuts, faces and accessories that can be chosen by the user.
The first version of Mimoji was limited to finished figures, mostly of animals. The user could record small videos and have his expression and facial movements imitated by the doll. With the upgrade, which may be unique to the CC9 line, it is now possible to create a figure with highly customizable human characteristics. Since avatars can also mimic the user's face, Xiaomi has been accused of plagiarizing Apple Memoji by several people on the Internet.

The Chinese giant issued a note saying it did not copy the Apple Memoji, and threatened to sue anyone who insisted on sharing what the company called "rumors." Xiaomi General Manager for Public Relations, Xu Jieyun, also said that Mimoji's first release was in May 2018, weeks before Apple announced the name Memoji, which was an update to Animoji.
Announced at WWDC 2018 as a new feature of iOS 12, the Apple Memoji was, in fact, an evolution of the existing Animoji. Like the first edition of Xiaomi Mimoji, the Apple tool only allowed the use of ready made dolls, animals and other figures. Thanks to TrueDepth camera technology, present from iPhone X, avatars could be controlled by the user's facial movements. The tool is also present in the latest models released by the apple, such as the iPhone XS, and it seems to remain available on the next smartphones of the company.
