SplashData, a developer of password management applications, released the list of the 100 worst passwords of 2018. The creator of SplashID established the ranking after evaluating more than 5 million keywords leaked on the Internet this year. Proving that the adoption of safe practices is still underestimated by Internet users, the notorious passwords "123456" and "password" remain the most used.

The report published by the company eight years ago, and five of these combinations occupy the first two places as the most insecure passwords. According to the CEO of SplashData, Morgan Slain, the idea of ​​the list exposes the fragility of this type of code and, thus, encourage the change to stronger passwords.

From the third seventh position, the list consists of numeric sequences with little variation and easy to remember, such as "123456789", "12345678" and "111111". The term "admin", common as a standard on routers and other devices, came in 12th place.
A novelty in the ranking was the term "donald", probably inspired by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, which was the 23 most used password. Despite the novelty of this term in particular, the use of names and nicknames of famous people is extremely common, as Slain explains.
"Hackers are very successful using celebrity names, pop culture and sports terms, as well as simple keyboard patterns, to hack online accounts, because they know that many people are using these easy-to-remember combinations," says CEO SplashData.

Therefore, it is advisable to use random terms, numbers and characters to create a truly secure password. A tip is to use password generators, and use managers like LastPass to remember codes and not worry about creating necessarily "memorable" passwords for all your logins.
According to the SplashData survey, the estimate is that approximately 10% of people have used at least one of the 25 worst passwords on the 2018 list. The company also believes that almost 3% of Internet users have used the worst password, 123456, at least once.
