Which? claims that Apple overestimates iPhone batteries by ~ 31%

In September of last year, we conducted a survey that possibly reflects the totality of opinions from iPhones users. With more than a third of the responses, the nearly 1,700 survey participants responded that they wanted to more battery in the new generation before anything else.

Well, Apple somehow fulfilled that wish. It is difficult to see any iPhone XS Max owner (highly praised) or, even better, iPhone XR (the benchmarks do not deny) complaining about battery. Regarding the iPhone XS, we still can’t say the same – although it has improved.

But Apple can still improve a lot in that sense, and we have to hope for rumors like this to be hot. However, worse than not putting bigger batteries in iPhones, is to promise such autonomy and don’t fulfill it. And, according to a study by Which?, this is exactly what Apple is doing.

Comparison of smartphone batteries - Which?

As shown in the graph above, Apple has overestimated the batteries of iPhones in a average of 31% – reaching 51% (!), In the case of the iPhone XR. In the most optimistic spectrum of all, Which? said Apple still overestimates by 18%.

HTC also promises a little more than it delivers, but surprisingly Nokia, Samsung and Sony make even conservative estimates. Tests of Which? with the Xperia Z5 they indicated that Sony promises almost nine hours (!) less of autonomy for him in relation to the reality, incredible.

I do not doubt much of the conclusions of the Which?, but I wonder why she didn’t specify the methodology for her tests. This is very important for us to understand how it arrived at these numbers, and even to help the manufacturers themselves.

Apple agrees with this:

We rigorously test our products and keep our promises of battery life. With tight integration between hardware and software, iPhone is built to intelligently manage energy usage and maximize battery life. Our testing methodology reflects that intelligence. THE Which? did not share his methodology with us, so we cannot compare their results with ours. We share our testing methodology, which we publish in detail here.

Still, it’s no wonder that Apple offers versions of the Smart Battery Case for all three models flagship current. ??‍♂️
