WhatsApp tests function of self-destructive messages in groups | Social networks

WhatsApp Beta started to show, in the update released last week for iPhone (iOS), the "Delete messages" feature (delete messages) for messenger groups. The function has been tested by the app since October and adopted different names during development, such as "Messages that disappear" (disappearing messages). The specialized website WABetaInfo announced on Thursday (26), after investigating the latest updates of the messenger beta version, that the feature should aim to facilitate the automatic cleaning of large amounts of messages in WhatsApp groups.

The function to automatically delete messages after a certain period of time first appeared in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android phones in October. Initially called "Messages that disappear" (disappearing messages), the resource was available for both collective and private conversations, which led to speculation that the messenger was working on a kind of "secret chat", a function of rival Telegram.

In subsequent updates of WhatsApp Beta for iPhone and Android phones, the function changed its name and became "Delete messages" (delete messages) and gained more time options to automatically delete messages from the app. Users could then choose to delete them every hour, day, week, month or year.

The updates of numbers 2.20.10.23 and 2.20.10.24 of WhatsApp Beta for iPhone followed the name change that happened in the version for Android and removed the function "Delete messages" from private conversations, which means that the feature is only available for groups on WhatsApp.

According to investigations on the WABetaInfo website, the "Delete messages" function was developed by WhatsApp with the aim of facilitating the cleaning of memory in collective conversations. As groups tend to accumulate many messages quickly, the purpose of the tool would be to automatically delete the content of the chat within a certain period (defined by the user). Thus, WhatsApp did not follow Telegram's secret chats, as the rival's feature is focused on providing more privacy for user conversations.
