WhatsApp is causing excessive battery drain on some Android and iPhone (iOS) phones. A large amount of reports has accumulated in forums and social networks on Friday (8) with the same complaint: the messenger would have started to drain energy unexpectedly with unusual background activity.

The problem would have arisen in version 2.19.112 of the application for the Apple platform and which brings the number 2.19.308 available on Google Play Store. The cause of the failure is not yet known. THE dnetc contacted the company's advisory, which has not yet commented on the case.

Several iPhone users have published iOS battery consumption reports on Twitter and Reddit showing high power consumption by WhatsApp, even with the app closed. In one case, of 17 total hours of power consumption, the application was not being used within 11 hours. Other complaints go beyond that, with prints that show the messenger spending up to 70% of the time on battery power in the background.

Similar behavior on Android, but seems to focus on smartphones from Xiaomi and OnePlus. According to reports on the web, the problem has occurred for those who have phones of these brands running Android 9 (Pie).

THE dnetc failed to reproduce the flaw in a Galaxy S8 with system in that same version, suggesting that the cause may be linked to a conflict of WhatsApp with proprietary software from Chinese manufacturers.
