WhatsApp in July: fighting fake news and Momo controversy | Social networks

In July, WhatsApp finally joined the fight against fake news. The initiative, which aims to reduce the proliferation of fake news, consists of awarding scholarships to find alternatives to the problem. The app's developers are also looking for other measures, such as the tool to alert when a link received is suspicious.

The mysterious case of Momo on WhatsApp, a Japanese profile that scared parents and children, also drew attention in that month. In addition, flaws and tips were highlighted in the dnetc. Check, in the following lines, the summary of the messenger in July.

Fighting news falsification

After controversies caused by the spread of rumors, WhatsApp announced 20 scholarships of US $ 50 thousand (about R $ 195 thousand in direct conversion) for researchers to promote solutions without jeopardizing the users' privacy. The measure comes as the messenger's first step in tackling the problem. Among the main focuses are counterfeits involving health and elections.

Also in order to prevent scams, the messenger started to indicate when a message was forwarded from one chat to another, which can be avoided with a simple tip. Another initiative is the limit on the transfer of texts and images for up to 20 chats after cases of violence in India. In the past few months, more than 20 people have been killed after rumors spread across WhatsApp.

Another novelty is the function that should warn when a suspicious link. Still in tests, the tool analyzes the address of shared links and applies a red stripe if the content is possibly malicious.

Tips for not being disturbed

In July, the dnetc gave some valuable tips for those who want to get rid of inconvenient people on WhatsApp. One was like listening to audio without the sender knowing. The blue check, which appears even when the "last seen" has been deactivated, can be "circumvented" in a simple way, forwarding the content to you even before playing.

The test version of WhatsApp also gained a shortcut to silence conversations through the Android notification center. In the notification itself, a button is displayed just below the messages when someone or group sends more than 51 messages.

Other tips, such as silencing contacts, leaving several groups at the same time, among others, can also be seen in our tutorial on how to get rid of inconvenient people on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp on any screen

The Flychat app, available only for Android, is a software that allows users to use various messengers, including WhatsApp, from any screen of their mobile phone. As with Facebook Messenger, which displays a small floating icon when notifications are received, the program creates a window that overlaps other apps. That way, you can reply and read messages without interrupting what you are currently doing.
