The Citizen Information Service (SIC) was created to enable compliance with the Information Access Law (LAI). In force since 2012, LAI regulates citizens' right of access to public information. This means that anyone can request data from the three branches (Executive, Legislative and Judicial) of the municipal, state, district and federal governments. There is no need to explain the reasons for the request.

On the Internet, requests are made through the e-SIC (Electronic System of the Citizen Information Service). In addition to submitting the request, the online system allows you to monitor compliance with the response period, consult the responses received, file appeals and submit complaints, among other actions.

To make a request for access to information, I need to access the e-SIC website (esic.cgu.gov.br) and create an account on the platform. Once the registration is complete, access the "Register order" area, available in the navigation panel and in the top menu of the system. Then fill in the form fields, starting with "recipient body". Select "Federal Police".

After indicating the recipient agency, choose how to receive a response to the request. There are three options: physical correspondence (with cost); search or consult in person (at the SIC counter); and the system. In the latter case, notices are sent by email.

In "Summary of Request", indicate the main topic addressed in the request. When writing the title, specify as much as possible what information you are asking for. For example, "number of firearms with active registration with the Federal Police". Once this is done, fill in the "Request Details" field, where you must provide as much details about the information you want to have access to. If necessary, it is possible to attach documents.

Finally, inform if you want to preserve your identity by checking the box at the bottom of the page and click on "Next". The system will open another form to confirm your data. Update them, if necessary, and then click Finish. Once the order is registered, the e-SIC will provide a protocol number. Keep that number: it is the quickest way to follow up on the request. The response time is 20 days.

How to track an online request?

To track an order in the system, click on the "Consult order" button, available on the navigation panel and on the top menu of the system. At the end of the screen, a list with all requests already made will be displayed. If you do not find your request in the list, search for the protocol number or use any of the other filters in the system.
