What is it for and how to set up an iCloud email alias

Like other email services, users of iCloud also have the possibility to create aliases (“Nicknames”) for your accounts. Before going into the details, however, it’s worth explaining what exactly a by the way: we are basically talking about a secondary address linked to the primary email.

And why does anyone need a by the way? Well, they serve at least two objective reasons: organization and security. First, a by the way it can be used for you to exchange messages or receive promotions messages from a specific address, configuring colored labels for each created account and, thus, better organize your email account.

And that brings us to the second point: at the slightest sign of problems or spam, it is possible to disable or even delete these accounts without harming your main email (and the best thing is that you do all of this without revealing it). When sending and receiving messages from a by the way, your primary address is never displayed and so you can guarantee the security of that account.

In iCloud, you can configure up to three aliases which are linked to your primary address and you have complete freedom to disable or delete them. Former MobileMe customers were able to create unlimited additional accounts that were maintained after the transition to iCloud. Apple points out, however, that by deleting one of these aliases, it will not be possible to recreate them (outside the current limit of three accounts).

Without further ado, here's how to set up one (or more) by the way linked to your iCloud email:

  1. Log into your iCloud account.
  2. Select the Mail web app. If you do not have an iCloud account set up, you will need to create one.

  4. Under your iCloud account, click on the option “Add a by the way”. In that same window, you can view how many aliases you own.
  5. Set an address for the by the way it cannot be the same as the primary email.
  6. Enter your name and add a personalized label if you prefer. You can change this information later. Click "OK".

Disable or delete iCloud email aliases

To disable or delete a by the way, go to step number three of the tutorial above and select the account you want to close. Then check the option “Disable by the way”Or click“ Delete ”.

The option to disable does not delete a given address; when deleting a by the way it is not possible to recover it, just by creating a new one by the way. Whenever a by the way disabled or deleted, emails sent to that by the way are returned to the sender.

To protect your primary email, visit Drafting Preferences and define one of aliases created as the default address; then, clear your primary address from the list. You will still receive emails at all addresses.

Finally, Apple remembers that you can't use a by the way to sign in to iCloud, and it can't be used to create a separate Apple ID.
