What changes from the 10.5 ″ iPad Pro to the third generation iPad Air?

This morning, as you followed here on the site, Apple launched new iPad Air and mini – and, with that, killed the old 10.5-inch iPad Pro that was still for sale.

We have already detailed all the differences of the current line of iPads, but some readers have asked us about what changes from the old 10.5 ″ iPad Pro to the third generation iPad Air – which, yes, has come to take its place. So, come on.

The 10.5 ″ iPad Pro was launched in mid-2017 and last year, when Apple released the new 11 ″ and 12.9 ″ Pros, it was kept on sale for a lower price: $ 650 for the version 64GB Wi-Fi, $ 780 for Wi-Fi + Cellular. This, of course, in the USA; here, they increased in price to R $ 5,400 (Wi-Fi 64GB) and R $ 6,400 (Wi-Fi + Cellular 64GB).

On the outside, both iPads are practically identical with the exception of the speaker holes: in the old Pro, there were four (one at each end); in the new Air, there are only two inferiors.

The screen of the new iPad Air, although laminated on glass, has the technology True Tone, support for a wide range of colors (P3) and the same resolution / pixel density as the previous one (1668 × 2224 pixels, at 264ppp), is no longer ProMotion – that is, it does not reach 120Hz in update rate.

The rear camera of the third generation iPad Air is also inferior to the one that equipped the old iPad Pro of 10.5 ″: here we have an 8 megapixel camera, while before it was 12 megapixel camera and had a Quad LED flash.

On the other hand, the third-generation iPad Air chip brings a beautiful leap over the old 10.5 ″ iPad Pro: from an A10X Fusion, we move on to the A12 Bionic (with Neural Engine and M12 coprocessor). It is the same processor that equips the XS, XS Max and XR iPhones, just slightly below the A12X Bionic of the 11 ″ and 12.9 ″ iPads.

The new iPad Air also supports the first generation Apple Pencil just like the new iPad mini and, unlike the old 10.5 ″ iPad Pro, it is also compatible with the Logitech Crayon (a more affordable alternative pencil than the Apple , originally launched with a focus on the educational segment). In addition, his Bluetooth goes from version 4.2 to 5.0.

With these minor changes and changing the name “Pro” to “Air”, Apple has also reduced its base prices in the U.S. to $ 500 (Wi-Fi) and $ 630 (Wi-Fi + Cellular) – which will also entail in price reductions here in Brazil, when it starts to be sold in our country.

The new iPad Air will be sold only in 64GB and 256GB versions, while the old Pro went up to 512GB.
