What are the differences between all models in the current line of iPads?

A week from its next special event, Apple surprised today and launched a new 10.5 ″ iPad Air alongside the fifth generation iPad mini. With that, she killed the old 10.5 ″ iPad Pro and organized that whole line a little bit – although it can still be confusing for some people.

Next, you will understand exactly what changes from one model to another.

9.7-inch iPad

Launched a year ago, at an educational event held in Chicago, this is now the entry-level (cheapest) iPad – starting at R $ 2,800 (or US $ 330 in the United States).

New 9.7-inch iPad with Apple Pencil support

It has a 9.7-inch Retina display (1536 × 2048 pixels, at 264ppp), Touch ID, A10 Fusion chip (with M10 coprocessor), up to 128GB capacity, supports the first generation Apple Pencil and is only compatible with keyboards Generic Bluetooth.

iPad mini of fifth generation

Moving on to R $ 3,500 (or US $ 400 abroad), the new iPad mini has a smaller screen – 7.9 inches – but with the same resolution as the previous one (1536 × 2048 pixels, only 326ppp), laminated (the pixels “glued” to the glass, generating less reflections), with technology True Tone and support for a wide range of colors (P3).

The chip is the A12 Bionic with Neural Engine and the M12 coprocessor, we get up to 256GB of storage and Bluetooth goes from 4.2 to 5.0.

iPad Air third generation

The Air line is back, sort of taking the place of the old 10.5 ″ iPad Pro and with a lower price – starting at R $ 4,500 (or US $ 500 in the USA).

For that extra R $ 1,000 (or US $ 100), we jumped to a 10.5-inch screen (1668 × 2224 pixels, at 264ppp) and gained support for the Smart Keyboard.

11 and 12.9 inch Pro iPads

Finally, we have the top-of-the-line iPad models – released by Apple in late October last year. Here, the jump is much higher (including the price, since they start from R $ 6,800 or US $ 800).

New iPad Pro side by side

The design of iPad Pro is much more modern, with the screen occupying the entire front – which gives it the name “Liquid Retina”. We have the technology there ProMotion (with higher refresh rates), Face ID, A12X Bionic chip, up to 1TB of capacity, second generation Apple Pencil with magnetic recharge and support for Smart Keyboard Folio.

The 11-inch version has a resolution of 1668 × 2388 pixels, while the 12.9-inch version jumps to 2048 × 2732 pixels. Both are 264 pixels per inch.

Their cameras are also superior: the rear is 12 megapixel (aperture ƒ / 1.8) with Quad-LED True Tone flash, while the front is based on the TrueDepth system used by Face ID.

IPad Pro also has four speakers at each end, providing a far superior sound experience; and while the rest of the line still uses the Lightning port, they have a USB-C port that also offers fast charging.

Indeed, with the exception of just the fact that the iPad mini has a smaller screen than the entry-level iPad, the entire line has now become much more consistent in terms of what each model offers and the price “step ladder” built by Apple.
