You should already know the line of external HDDs My Book Studio, from Western Digital, after all, it is being commented around here. What you may not yet know about the new line of drives with aluminum case and capacities of up to 3TB: besides being a delight for the eyes, perfect to match any metallic Mac, they have perforations that allow them to dispense with fans, taking them to a quieter performance.
With a USB 2.0 port and two FireWire 800s, the only thing these new My Books leave behind is the lack of Thunderbolt connections, but that may even be a good thing, given their buddy price: $ 150 / $ 200 / $ 250 for 1TB / 2TB / 3TB in the WD store. Would that be possible with the new high-speed system? Maybe not.
Incidentally, speaking of price, this seems to be an excellent option for anyone who is not willing to pay the tremendous extra that Apple charges for 1TB more in Time Capsule. It is worth noting, however, that the HDDs used by WD in My Books are not the same Caviar Green that Ma uses in its router and external drive.
According to WD itself commented with the CNET News, the drives supplied to Apple are uniquely branded and meet Ma's requirements to be classified as a server, and cannot be purchased anywhere else. If that justifies a difference of US $ 150 per 1TB, it is up to each one.
