Western Digital launches 2TB hard drives at 7,200RPM

Western Digital launched its first high performance 2TB hard drives this morning in two models: Caviar Black, for consumers, and RE4, for corporate use (such as networked storage devices, for example).

WD 2TB HDDs

Both are 7,200RPM, but that's not all: the drives offer 64MB of cache, in addition to two processors and two actuators that make your head move faster. With this, the manufacturer hopes to reduce the possible effects of slowness based on the fact that it consists of four 500GB cards.

The HDs connect to 3Gbps SATA I or II interfaces, but the RE4 offers special features such as native command queue, anti-shock sensor and tested against constant access. Amazing: your MTBF (mean time between failures) is no less than 1.2 million hours.

The WD Caviar Black is now available on the market for $ 300. RE4 should only be found on OEM workstations and servers, but is still in the final testing phase. Both will offer a five-year limited warranty.
