watchOS 5.1 is now available to Apple Watches owners

After many weeks of testing, Apple has just released the watchOS 5.1 (build 16R591) for owners of Apple Watches from the Series 1 generation.

This is the first significant update to watchOS 5, released in mid-September. With it come more than 70 new emojis, support for FaceTime in group (only via audio, of course) and various improvements / fixes.

We also have, in watchOS 5.1, a new display called “Color” (“Color”). In it, users can choose from several color tones that basically occupy the entire screen of the device – this in the Apple Watch Series 4; in previous models, the display occupies only the central circle for the analog clock itself.

Here are the official release notes:

This update includes improvements and bug fixes:

  • Apple Watch Series 4 contacts emergency services automatically if you don’t move for about a minute after detecting a fall. It also plays a message that informs the attendant that the Apple Watch has detected a drop and shares the coordinates of its location, when possible.
  • Fixes an issue that could cause an incomplete installation of the Walkie-Talkie app for some users.
  • Addresses an issue that prevented some users from being able to send or receive invitations on the Walkie-Talkie.
  • Addresses an issue where some Activity awards previously won were not displayed in the Awards tab of the Activity app for some users.

The update is available immediately on the Watch app on the iPhone – in the “My Watch” tab, go to General »Software Update and follow the instructions provided by Apple.
