It's been a while since Apple has released photos taken with the iPhone in order to publicize the device's photography capabilities.

Recently, we have seen a flood of photos and videos published by Ma extolling the Portrait Lighting Mode (Portrait Lightning), which came with iPhones 8 Plus and X, including a completely Brazilian commercial focused on our Carnival.

Now, the newest video published on Ma's YouTube channel shows how this effect was created for the iPhone X.

Discover the process we went through to create Portrait Lighting. Combining timeless lighting principles with advanced machine learning, we created an iPhone that takes studio-quality portraits without the stadium.

The rather short video shows in time lapse a team working primarily with the study of the “art of portraits”, ranging from paintings to very well taken photographs (with professional cameras, of course). So they worked with image specialists and the best photographers in the world.

After having acquired knowledge about portraits, they combined what they acquired with the wonders of machine learning and voile, the Portrait Lighting Mode was created, bringing quality studio photos to the iPhone.

It is clear that the video shows only a portion of all the work that happened “behind the scenes” to deliver the resource that, incidentally, is still in the beta phase, being improved more and more; anyway, very interesting to know a little more about this type of process.
