Using Kindle: Complete Guide from Basic to Advanced

Basic level

1. Make notes and underline

One of the best things about a Kindle is its touch screen and the ability to underline snippets and make notes. Students, master's students, doctoral students and people who like to keep the best of what they read can enjoy this function a lot.

To do this, just keep your finger on the start stretch and drag to where you want to stop. The griffon is ready and an extra menu appears, full of options. You can delete the italics, insert a text note of your own in it, share, search for the excerpt, or search Wikipedia or translate. That is a smart book.

2. Use Kindle as USB stick

It may seem like a silly tip, but it can also save you in a tight moment. When you connect your Kindle to a computer, it opens as an external device folder, and you can copy anything you want to it. Basic Kindles have 4 GB of internal storage, and if you have less than 200 books in your library, you should have about 2 GB left. J can help.

3. Translate excerpts from books and learn new words

One of the extra benefits Kindle brings me is the ability to train English. I buy a lot of books in this language especially on Kindle because if you stumble upon something, the built-in dictionary can help me. To configure yours, click on the gear that appears in the top menu and then "All Settings".

Go to "Languages and Dictionaries" and then "Dictionaries". There, select "English" and then the Oxford dictionary. Then click on the word to be translated and its meaning will be shown in English. Drag your finger to the left and you go through Wikipedia and then come translation.

When selecting a passage to translate, click on the three balls and choose "Translation". Select the language from English to Portuguese and you're done. To enjoy and learn more words, click on the three balls in the top menu within a book and select "Vocabulary Tips". Activate the option and return. The text will be full of hints, and you can control the amount by clicking at the bottom where it says "Vocabulary Tips".

4. Enable airplane mode for more battery

This is quick and simple. All Kindles come with built-in WiFi (some even with free 3G) and in the end we forget to turn it off. It is a fact that the battery of this gadget can go up to a month depending on its use, but sometimes we need that little extra.

In the gear that appears at the top, you can activate airplane mode so that the connections are disconnected. Just be sure to activate again later to download new books and sync your reading progress.

5. Stop viewing recommended books

We don't always want to be looking at the eBooks Amazon recommends along with our library books. To turn off this function, go to Gear> All Settings> Device Options> Advanced Options> Home Screen View> Turn Off.

1. Export your notes

It is no use having so many griffins made if they stay in your Kindle. To access everything you've saved, connect your Amazon eReader to your computer using a USB cable. In the "documents" folder you will find a file called "My Clippings.txt". Here are your excerpts with time, date, location and more.

If you want more complete documents, go to the book you want, click at the top of the screen, and in the upper right corner, see the three balls menu. Click on "Notes" and then "Export Notes". You will receive in the email that is registered in your Amazon account two files, a CSV and a PDF, with everything neat. Only for books purchased on the site.

2. Activate Whispersync and read on smartphone too

Although the Kindle is practical, you are not always with it around, unlike your smartphone. If you hit that urge to read even without your eReader, your phone could break a branch. Get the Kindle app for free, sign in with the same eReader account, and download the books you're reading.

A Kindle is not cheap, and you can start with free eBooks a hand at the wheel. Amazon's own site has an area with titles that have always been free, as classics in the public domain literature, as well as titles that are temporarily free.

You can access this area here, and proceed with a common eBook purchase. the book will be delivered to your Kindle via WiFi normally.

4. Send personal documents to Kindle and keep becape

Another advantage of this eReader is that you can send your own documents and books to be read on the Eink screen. Free books you have downloaded from other repositories, personal documents, and more can easily be downloaded.

The simplest option is to connect your Kindle via USB to your computer and transfer whatever you need to the "documents" folder. However, you can also send what you have via a unique email that Amazon provides when registering your Kindle.

send documents "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc ((2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/send-documents-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/enviar-documentos-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/enviar-documentos-w596.jpg 596w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/send-documentos-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/send-documents-w336.jpg 336w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/enviar-documentos-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload

To find it, go to gear> All Settings> My Account> Kindle Email Address and write down the email provided. Then attach the document to the email and send it to me. Be received via WiFi on your eReader.

If you would like to convert your document to Kindle format before delivery, type "Convert" in the subject line of the email.

Another way to use the Send to Kindle app, provided for free by Amazon itself and which can be downloaded here. In versions for Windows and OSX, a small and simple app where you log in with your account and drag files to be sent to the device.

5. Share an excerpt on Facebook or Twitter

When you select a piece of text, one of the options that appear is Share. Clicking on it gives you the option to share the text on Facebook or Twitter.

kindle twitter "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc (2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-twitter-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-twitter-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-twitter-w596.jpg 596w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-twitter-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-twitter-w336.jpg 336w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-twitter-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload

Clicking on any of them will take you to a login screen that needs to be completed only once. You can add a note before sharing.

6. Create collections

There comes a time when, just like me, you start piling up too many eBooks in your Kindle library. You don't find what you need anymore and everything becomes a mess. To keep everything organized, use the collections.

collections kindle "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc (2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/colecoes-kindle-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/colecoes-kindle-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/colecoes-kindle-w596.jpg 596w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/colecoes-kindle-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/colecoes-kindle-w336.jpg 336w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/colecoes-kindle-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload

Then you can edit or remove it, and when you go to a book menu you can also add or remove it from one or several collections.

Advanced level

1. Share the books with someone in the family.

In other countries, you can share a purchased eBook with members of your family, but this wonder has not yet come here. A gambiarra solves this issue, but requires confidence in the person with whom to share the account.

whispersync "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc (2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/whispersync-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/ whispersync-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/whispersync-w596.jpg 596w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/whispersync-w450. jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/whispersync-w336.jpg 336w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/whispersync-w300.jpg 300w "class = "lazyload
Remember to turn on Whispersync / AndroidPIT (screenshot)

People will need to have your Amazon login, and that means they will have access to everything you buy or wishlist. They must sign in to their Kindles or smartphones and can download purchased eBooks.

But an addendum. I need to turn off Whispersync so that many people can read the same book without losing the part where they stopped reading.

2. Use Pocket or Instapaper to read articles on Kindle

Not only books that live a Kindle. If you also want to read some news on this screen that is much more pleasing to the eye, you can use Pocket or Instapaper services for that. The two read texts, articles and other media that you view on the Internet and keep to consult later.

pocket to kindle "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc (2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/pocket-to-kindle-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/ userfiles / 7169726 / image / pocket-to-kindle-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/pocket-to-kindle-w596.jpg 596w, https: // fscl01. fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/pocket-to-kindle-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/pocket-to-kindle-w336.jpg 336w, https: //fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/pocket-to-kindle-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload

Have an account for one of these two services, which are free, and access Pocket 2 Kindle and Instapaper to set up delivery.

3. Take a screenshot

Do not want to underline, do not want to select? No problem. You can register something from your Kindle with a screenshot, which is quite simple to make.

kindle printscreen "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc (2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-printscreen-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-printscreen-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-printscreen-w596.jpg 596w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-printscreen-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-printscreen-w336.jpg 336w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-printscreen-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload

Tap opposite corners of your eReader's screen (top right with bottom left or vice versa) and the display will flash. Ready. Connect your Kindle to your computer and the images will be in the root, in PNG format. Ah, in black and white, of course.

4. Transform PDFs to Kindle

The same Being Kindle that I recommended a few tips ago serve us here. In the app, you can go to your options and enable the "Convert PDF documents to Kindle format" option. It will not look perfect, but it will be much better than reading the PDF on the small screen, as there is no automatic formatting for this file.

convert pdf 1 "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc ((2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/converter-pdf-1-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/ userfiles / 7169726 / image / converter-pdf-1-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/converter-pdf-1-w596.jpg 596w, https: // fscl01. fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/converter-pdf-1-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/converter-pdf-1-w336.jpg 336w, https: //fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/converter-pdf-1-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload

If you want to keep the PDF, there is another solution. The K2pdfopt app turns a common PDF file into another PDF, which is larger-lettered and readable on smaller screens. It is available for Windows, Linux and OSX, and can be downloaded for free here.

5. Use the browser

It's not the most practical thing in the world, but if you don't have a mobile smartphone, or just want to go to a website while using your Kindle, there is no way. In the device's own home, if you access the three balls menu, see the "Experimental browser" option.

kindle browser "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc ((2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-navegador-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-navegador-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-navegador-w596.jpg 596w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-navegador-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-navegador-w336.jpg 336w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726 /image/kindle-navegador-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload
Nothing like going back to browser time in black and white. No, pear / AndroidPIT (screenshot)

This function, which has been experimental for years, will lead you to a basic browser, but with the right keyboard and even an article mode for easier reading. It is not fast and totally in black and white, but for a reading it already serves.

6. Restart a locked Kindle

It is very difficult to happen, but it may be that your Kindle crashes irreversibly for a number of factors. If this happens and you do not want to wait for the battery to run out to attempt a return, there is a way to do a hard reset.

Keep the power button pressed for 40 seconds. After that time, you will see the image of the tree with the boy underneath, and that means he will start from scratch. You don't lose your books, your notes and your progress because they are safe in your account.

7. Further reading information below

The fact that eBooks don't have fixed pages is a bit of a mess for those who are used to physical books. But there is very good reading information that Kindle can offer. When you enter an eBook, see that at the bottom some things are shown.

kindle infos page "sizes =" (max-width: 806px) calc (100vw - 24px), (max-width: 995px) 782px, (max-width: 1216px) calc (2 * (100vw - 30px) / 3) + 15px - 24px), 782px "src =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-infos-pagina-w782.jpg "srcset =" https://fscl01.fonpit.de/ userfiles / 7169726 / image / kindle-infos-page-w782.jpg 782w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-infos-pagina-w596.jpg 596w, https: // fscl01. fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-infos-pagina-w450.jpg 450w, https://fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-infos-pagina-w336.jpg 336w, https: //fscl01.fonpit.de/userfiles/7169726/image/kindle-infos-page-w300.jpg 300w "class =" lazyload
