Using Google Maps Augmented Reality on Android or iPhone | Maps and location

The Google Maps app now lets you use augmented reality to get navigational directions on footpaths. Called Live View, the feature uses the phone's camera to project turn-by-turn directions over the real world. The news had been tested since 2018 and is finally available to Brazilian users, both in the version of the app for Android and iPhone (iOS).

In the following tutorial, check out how to use augmented reality in the Google Maps app. The procedure was performed on an iPhone 8 with iOS 12, but the tips also apply to users of Google-powered devices. It is noteworthy that the feature is still in the testing phase (beta) and may not work properly in some situations.

Step 1. In Google Maps, search for an address or add a point over the map. Once you've done that, tap "Routes" and at the top of the screen select the route to p. Then in the bottom bar, tap "Live View";

Step 2. Some usage guidelines for the feature will be displayed. Tap "Next" and "Start";

Step 3. You will need to allow access to the Google Maps camera app from your mobile phone by tapping "OK". Finally, just hold the phone upright and point the camera at the street. Your route guidance will be inserted in large 3D arrows on the environment.
