Today we report that the Trump administration has postponed the newest round of taxes (this time, 10%) on all products made in China and imported into the United States. It would all start on September 1, but the government decided to charge it (only certain product categories) for December 15. Such a tax, remember, is valid for products that had not been affected by previous tax adjustments (basically, most Apple products).
We also said that the United States Trade Representative, or USTR, would announce today which products would not escape tariffs and which would be delayed.
According to Reuters, the AirPods (in fact, wireless headsets in general, including those from Beats), the Apple Watch it’s the HomePod they are not part of this “deferred list”, and, therefore, will be impacted by the tariff increase as of September 1st.
Items that face tariffs on September 1 include consumer electronics products such as smart watches, fitness trackers, smart speakers and Bluetooth headsets. These were saved from tariffs last year after manufacturers sent letters to the government.
That way, as we speak, either Apple will absorb that increase (which is likely to have an impact on its profit margin) or American consumers will pay the duck.
It is worth noting that AirPods and Apple Watch played an essential role so that Apple’s numbers were not impacted by the drop in sales of iPhones.
It now remains for Apple to prepare and design a strategy for increasing the tax that will take effect on December 15 – this, yes, will affect products such as Macs, iPhones, iPads, etc.
