USA vs. China: AirPods, Apple Watch and HomePod to be affected by new tax as early as September [atualizado: iMac também]

Today we report that the Trump government has postponed the latest round of taxes (this time 10%) on all products made in China and imported into the United States. It would start on September 1, but the government decided to throw the charge (certain product categories only) for December 15. Such a tax, it should be remembered, is valid for products that had not been affected by previous tax adjustments (basically, most Apple products).

We also said that the United States Trade Representative, or USTR, would announce today which products would not escape tariffs and which would be postponed.

According to Reuters, the Airpods (in fact, wireless headsets in general, including those from Beats), the Apple watch it's the HomePod are not part of this “deferred list” and will therefore be impacted by the tariff increase from 1 September.

The rates facing September 1 tariffs include consumer electronics such as smart watches, fitness trackers, smart speakers and Bluetooth headsets. These were spared tariffs last year after manufacturers sent letters to the government.

That way, as we speak, either Apple absorbs that increase (which should have some impact on its profit margin) or American consumers will pay the duck.

Note that AirPods and Apple Watch played an essential role in preventing Apple's numbers from being impacted by falling sales of iPhones.

It now remains to prepare Apple and design a strategy for the tax increase that becomes effective on December 15 that, yes, affect products such as Macs, iPhones, iPads, etc.
