ā€œUltraportableā€ SSD project promises to provide ports and up to 2TB extra for MacBooks [Air/Pro]

If you have a new MacBook Air / Pro, so two things are likely to bother you more than the others, depending on your use: storage and connectivity.

Although it is possible to customize them at the time of purchase (with an SSD of up to 1TB on the MacBook Air or with up to 8TB in the case of the 16-inch MacBook Pro), it will certainly cost you a few thousand additional dollars.

If your problem is also connectivity, then add some more money to purchase a hub which provides some of the most used ports, such as USB-A, microSD, SD, HDMI, etc.

How about, then, solve these two situations with a single solution? precisely what Commotron promises with the FlashDock, a project of hub/ SSD launched on Kickstarter that offers both extra ports and additional storage for MacBooks Air / Pro (2016 models and later).

FlashDock is our newest idea to give you the freedom you need to save your ideas and the flexibility to keep your hardware current.

As you can imagine, this accessory connects to the USB-C ports of MacBooks without the need for cables, which makes it incompatible with other notebook models.

Specifically, the FlashDock provides an HDMI 4K port, two USB-A, one USB-C and slot for SD and microSD memory cards. There is also a version that has a Mini DisplayPort 5K port, a USB-A / USB-C port and the same memory card slots as the other model.

As an SSD, the accessory has versions with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, contributing to increase the storage power of your Mac. For all this, however, you must choose a model: the version with 512GB and an HDMI port costs 150 (~ R $ 750), while the 1TB model with Mini DisplayPort costs 240 (~ R $ 1,200). Finally, the version with 2TB and Mini DisplayPort costs 350 (~ R $ 1,750) more "on account" than new hardware or Apple's customization options.

As we said, FlashDock is a Kickstarter project and is therefore not yet available and there is a chance that this will never happen. Therefore, Commotron needs to raise just over 40 thousand to start the manufacture of the accessory, otherwise the project will go down the drain; by the time of this publication, they had collected nearly 12 thousand.

If everything goes well and the goal is reached, buyers who support the initiative and purchase some of the FlashDock models will receive their accessories from April. An alternative to the FlashDock is Neo Storage, from Minix, but it has fewer port options and the internal storage only goes up to 480GB.
