tvOS 12 is now available with Dolby Atmos and new screensavers for Apple TV owners

Following the wave of updates that are coming today, Apple is also releasing the final version of tvOS 12 (build 16J364, same as version Golden Master released last week).

Who can update?

If you’re on tvOS 11, you can update your Apple TV as normal – tvOS 12 supports exactly the same devices that your predecessor embraced; that is, the Fourth generation Apple TV and the Apple TV 4K.

What’s new?

Unlike the other updates, tvOS 12 is a more timely update, without thanks news. Still, some can make the eyes (and ears) of users, such as technology support Dolby Atmos of sound – which, in compatible content, “moves” 3D audio throughout the environment and creates a feeling of total immersion, as a home theater would.

To complement the novelty, Apple is creating a special section on the iTunes Store with content that supports the technology – and will update the users’ library with new versions of movies or series that get sound in Dolby Atmos, for free.

Another interesting novelty is the Zero Sign-on, an evolution of the resource Single Sign-on last year that allows you to access content from various platforms streaming without even having to enter a password – the system takes care of authenticating your identity with them after an initial setup. The tool, of course, will only be available with compatible services and will initially work only in the US, but is expected to expand quickly.

New tvOS 12 screensaver

We also have a series of new screensavers embedded, with impressive images of the Earth that occupy the entire screen, filmed by astronauts on the International Space Station. And speaking of screensavers, they now bring the name of the place where they were filmed (to put an end to that curiosity you once had).

Finally, Apple added compatibility with remote controls for major home automation systems to browse Apple TV and search with Siri.

How to update?

Very simple: just open the Settings app on your Apple TV and go to System »Software Update. The update will already be listed there as available and you can click on it to download and install it. If you want, you can also activate the option to install updates automatically so you don’t have to worry about it the next time.

Everything is done OTA (over-the-air) and you don’t need to do anything until the end of the process, but depending on your internet connection and the traffic on Apple’s servers (which should be high in those early days), the update can take a few hours.

Have a good time! And, of course, come here to tell us what you think of the news.
