Tutorial: how to use HomePod even in a location without a Wi-Fi network

O HomePod, Apple's quality smart speaker, necessarily needs an internet connection to work. And that connection can only be provided in one way: a Wi-Fi network.

There is no point, for example, taking your HomePod to a location without a Wi-Fi network and trying to play music on it by connecting your iPhone or iPad to the Bluetooth speaker. This, incidentally, is not even possible you need necessarily use Apple's AirPlay technology. And, to access AirPlay, you need a Wi-Fi network.

On that Easter, I traveled with my family to a house that had no internet connection, but I took my HomePod anyway (after all, fundamental music). And how did I solve this problem? In a very simple way.

But, what is simple about this solution is that it was important not to be it, I wouldn’t be able to put the songs from “Moana: A Sea of Adventures” to play 798 times (the oldest daughter thanks)! đŸŽ”đŸŒŠđŸ˜

Everything you need for this feat to be accompanied by someone who has an iPhone or some other device capable of share the internet with you (the good old iOS Personal Access) or having two devices with you (one personal and one from work, for example), if you are alone.

How to share internet from iPhone (or iPad)

If the device you intend to share the internet on is an iPhone (or even an iPad with 4G connectivity), the step-by-step for this is very simple:

Personal Access on iOS

  1. Access Cell Phone Settings.
  2. Tap "Personal Access" and then tap the slider to activate it.
  3. If you want, you can change the “Wi-Fi password” just tap on that option and define a new one.

If the Personal Access option is not available, you need to check with your operator why (your plan may not offer such a service).

Now, on your iPhone (which you want to connect to this created network), go to Wi-Fi settings and look for the iPhone or iPad in the list. Then, touch the Wi-Fi network to connect. Enter the password and voil!

When you connect your iPhone to the network created by the other device, HomePod understands that it is a Wi-Fi network (and, in practice), then it will work without any problem. It is only worth mentioning that the device on which the internet is being shared (if it is an iPhone, of course) seems to be able to “play” a song for HomePod, since the speaker appears as an option in AirPlay; the problem that when trying to do this, an error occurs.

of course problems happen. If by chance your HomePod (even with your iPhone connected to the Internet via Personal Access on the other device) does not show signs of life, the way to reset the speaker settings.

How to reset HomePod settings

By iPhone

  1. On your iOS device, open the Home app (Home) make sure your iOS device is connected with the Apple ID you used to set up your HomePod;

  3. Wait another 5 seconds, touch the top of the HomePod and hold your finger there;
  4. The white animation will turn red, keep your finger on the top of the HomePod;
  5. Siri will say that your HomePod is about to be reset; when you hear three beeps, you can lift your finger.
