Tool that enables the Continuity feature on older Macs now works with dongles

Not so long ago, we talked about the Continuity Activation Tool. The idea of this simple tool: enable the use of the Handoff, Instant Hotspot and AirDrop features in several models of Macs unofficially supported by OS X Yosemite.

At the time, we wrote that the tool was a great promise but that, as it had been launched very recently, it would be good to wait for an evolution. This week, the Continuity Activation Tool gained good improvements. The most expressive, undoubtedly, is the possibility of operating also with dongles (USB) Bluetooth 4.0.

If your old Mac is incompatible with the Continuity feature, it's worth taking a look at the chart below and seeing if the tool can help you.

It is worth noting that not all dongle compatible with this tool. The creator of Continuity Activation Tool explained that dongles based on the Cambridge Silicon Radio CSR8510 A10 chip (for example, the Inatek Nano) are not compatible with the tool. The recommendation is to look for accessories based on Broadcom's BCM20702 chip (similar to those used by Apple on their computers). Some examples include Asus BT400, IOGEAR GBU521, GMYLE, etc.

Instant Hotspot is still not working well with the use of dongles. This is something they already know but, at least for now, there is nothing to do. Atheros AirPort Wi-Fi cards block the Continuity feature even when the user is using a dongle Bluetooth 4.0 and there's nothing else to do.

Another important detail is that the Continuity Activation Tool modifies several things in the system, including disabling some security features. So, if you really want to invest in it, it is good to go at your own risk.
