Disable automatic download
The automatic download of photos and videos is undoubtedly the biggest source of data consumption on WhatsApp.
Fortunately, you can disable the feature completely or allow downloading only when your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
On Android, the function can be adjusted in the messenger settings "Data and storage" "Automatic download" "When using data network".
