Compact, Mini and Lite: three small smartphones that have missed you

Compact smartphones have been in short supply for some time. Not all manufacturers were able to create small and powerful phones, it is true, but there would be some models with these characteristics. According to some market rumors, Samsung should soon present the mini version of its current top of the line, the Galaxy S8. How about we take this opportunity to remember the little ones that enchanted us?

The Xperia Z3 Compact is not the first model in this series, but it was the first that Sony marketed here. The device arrived on the market in 2014 and, by the way, I must say that at that time there were many «Lite» and «Mini» models that did not conquer at first sight (nor at the second or third too). Sony’s idea was to offer a model that could compete between the tops of the line, and not as an intermediate option.

The Z3 Compact had the hardware of the Xperia Z3, the top of Sony for the second half of that year, that is, it came with a 20.7MP camera and 2GB of RAM. Of course, Sony needed to make some adjustments to this model so that it would reach the market for a different price than the conventional Z3. The screen had a resolution cut in half to HD, and storage was one of the weaknesses of the 16 GB Z3 Compact.

It is interesting to note that Sony managed to open a category by creating a model that was smaller and more powerful, in contrast to what other manufacturers did at the time, by offering a product with a name similar to that of its high-ends but with much lower hardware. The last model in the series launched was in 2016, the Xperia X Compact.

2. Samsung Galaxy Alpha

August 2014

The Galaxy Alpha is a model that has almost five inches of screen, 4.7 to be more exact, and it was through it that Samsung developed the Galaxy A line. I believe that the Alpha and its versions were a kind of laboratory, since it was from this series that the manufacturer decided to dare and follow a more original visual line, even in the intermediate segment.

The Galaxy Alpha was somewhat reminiscent of the Galaxy S5, which was the brand’s top of the line in the year it was launched, in 2014. However, the device featured an extremely thin 6.2 mm aluminum frame, with more lines lines and more elegant details.

Its AMOLED panel was 4.7 inches and was of a very high quality. The Alpha also came with 2GB of RAM, which was a standard that year among intermediate models, and had a downside at the time, the 1,860 mAh battery considered low. Moreover, the Galaxy Alpha was a very promising compact.

3. Motorola Moto G

The first Moto G is an iconic device. He was responsible for setting standards and marked Motorola’s highest moment, unlike current times, 2013 was its golden year. What goes unnoticed by most users is that the first generation Moto G can also be classified as a compact model.

The device had a 4.5-inch screen that offered a very pleasant user experience, but it was still considered a bit small by the standards of that time. This was by no means the negative point of the Moto G, as its display was the only one that offered HD quality and resolution in 2013. In addition, the model cost little.

Taking the Moto G 2013 in my hands today brought me a somewhat funny perception. Looking at the model and keeping the current design standards in mind, I had the impression that I was facing a smartphone with exaggerated edges and extremely small, a real brick. The information displayed on the screen through Android 5.0 Lollipop is tiny.

I would buy a model with less than 5 «screen in 2017 without the slightest problem. But it would have to be powerful.

The Moto G 2014 arrived with a bigger screen, which was one of the main requests of the company’s users who wanted to change their phone. Currently, the Moto G5 Plus has undergone a minimal screen reduction compared to its predecessor, the Moto G4 Plus, and this has caused quite a stir among fans of the brand. Now, imagine if we had to go back to the 4.5 inches of the compact Moto G in full year 2017?

Have you ever had a compact model that you miss?
