The wearable device market grew 172% in 2015; Fitbit leads, followed by Xiaomi and Apple

At the beginning of December last year, we released a survey of the International Data Corporation on the wearable device market (wearables) for the third quarter of 2015. IDC has now released data for the entire year.

Fitbit ended 2015 at the top, selling 8.1 million devices in the fourth quarter, which represents a 29.5% market share. Apple, in a short time, took the second position selling an estimated 4.1 million Watches in the period (15% of market share). In third came the Chinese Xiaomi, with 2.7 million units or 9.7%.

In the year as a whole, Fitbit also topped the ranking (21 million; 26.9%), but the second and third positions were reversed: Xiaomi (12 million, 15.4%) and Apple (11.6 million; 14, 9%). Behind the three are Garmin (3.3 million; 4.2%) and Samsung (3.1 million; 4%). Companies like Huawei, Motorola / Lenovo, Sony, Pebble and Jawbone don't even appear on the list; the market as a whole grew 171.6% in one year, reaching 78.1 million units sold.

Considering that Apple Watch s started to hit the market in April (that is, it “took part” in more than a whole quarter of the survey) with limited stocks and a very slow international expansion, Ma did very well in its first year entering the wearable market. We'll see how to be 2016.
