The best applets for Cinnamon

Check out a list of the best and most useful Cinnamon and Linux Mint Applets

Linux Mint 14 released full of news, but we can still increment it even more

Using some applets, for those who don't know applets are mini apps, launchers, desktop shortcuts that improve productivity on Linux Mint and any other distro that use Cinnamon.

Managing Applets in Cinnamon

Click the panel settings icon and then Applets. The window below will appear.

Brilliance

Our first suggestion of Applet is the brightness controller, it is already installed by default on Linux Mint just by looking for the menu and clicking.

Caps / Num Lock Indicator

This is especially for notebooks that do not have LED indicators for the Lock keys, one of the most useful of all. It can also be useful if you don't want to have to look at the keyboard to see if one is enabled.

This applet is not available natively but you can install it using the following commands:

  • wget http://goo.gl/44rlN -O Caps-Num-Lock.zip
  • unzip -q Caps-Num-Lock.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

And then use the Applet management window to enable it.

Shut down button

This Applet allows us to shut down, restart, log out, suspend etc … This handy applet is also not available natively and you should install it using these commands.

  • wget http://goo.gl/9m3Yd -O Shutdown.zip
  • unzip -q Shutdown.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

A very practical way to take screenshots of the desktop and with some really cool features, such as being able to select a particular area to capture, can't talk about a desktop who likes to show how their desktop looks and who makes tutorials. Install using these commands:

  • wget http://goo.gl/zA5zx -O Screenshot.zip
  • unzip -q Screenshot.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

Virtual Box Lanador

If you usually virtualize systems with Virtual Box, this Applet will make things faster.

To install use the following commands:

  • wget http://goo.gl/b3xZB -The Virtualbox-Launcher.zip
  • unzip -q Virtualbox-Launcher.zip
  • mv cinna * vbox * / vboxla * ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

TouchPad indicator

For those using Net / Notbook this Applet allows you to enable / disable the touchpad.

To install use the commands:

  • wget http://goo.gl/R7BqP -The Touchpad-Indicator.zip
  • unzip -q Touchpad-Indicator.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

Cinnamon restart button

To make a complete theme change or any interface modification required to restart Cinnamon this Applet will make your life easier.

To install we will use the following commands:

  • wget http://goo.gl/L5vGj -O Restart-Cinnamon.zip
  • unzip -q Restart-Cinnamon.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

Gmail Email Notification

This Applet notifies you of new messages in your Google Account email

To install this applet on Linux Mint use the commands:

  • wget http://goo.gl/skW6E -Gmail-Notifier.zip
  • unzip -q Gmail-Notifier.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

After installing you need to edit a text file by entering your email and password, use the command:

  • gedit ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/gmailnotifier@denisigo/settings.js

Network Monitor

This Applet Shows Network Traffic on Your Linux Mint

To install we will use the following commands:

  • sudo apt-get install vnstat vnstati
  • wget http://goo.gl/T16P7 -The Network-Usage-Monitor.zip
  • unzip -q Network-Usage-Monitor.zip -d ~ / .local / share / cinnamon / applets

Remember that in every step, after installation you must add the Applets as described at the beginning of this article, through the Settings Menu or Settings and the Applets option.

By the way, these Applets work on Linux Mint 13 LTS as well.

See you next time.
