Emojis are already an essential part of online conversations. To find them more easily on WhatsApp Web or Desktop, access the chat field and put a colon (:) followed by the term related to the emoji you want to use.

For example, when typing: birthday, all the options that involve this subject will appear just above, even before the word finishes being written. You can also navigate between them using the arrow keys and select the option with Enter.

2. View conversation by hovering

Sometimes we receive a message and we want to know what was said, however, without letting the sender know that the message has already been read. Even without disabling the read confirmation, in the versions of WhatsApp for computer, this is possible by placing the cursor over the respective chat. Without clicking, the application will display the last message sent, as long as your interlocutor doesn't know anything.

3. Drag files to attach

When you use WhatsApp on your PC, you may be working or studying. In these situations, it is quite common to need to exchange files. Sending one through the messenger can be very quick and intuitive: just drag and drop it over the conversation with the recipient.

Usually, you can only access one WhatsApp account at a time on the same device. There is, however, a trick to circumvent this limitation on the computer. Open your browser and sign in to WhatsApp Web. Then, open a window in browser incognito or incognito mode and start the session with another account.

5. Convert emoticons to emojis

Both WhatsApp Web and the desktop program have support for emoticons. The user types and the software converts to the respective emoji. For example, when typing :-D, you will automatically see it on the screen. Several popular options are available, such as :-), :-(, 😛 and <3.

By default, WhatsApp Web and Desktop will display notifications every time a conversation is updated. Depending on the volume of messages, the windows popping up on the screen and the noise can be annoying, but you can disable these functions. Access the WhatsApp menu through the three dots at the top of the page, press Settings and then Notifications.

In this section, choose individually if you want to hear the sounds, receive alerts on your desktop and see the previous messages. Another alternative is to disable sounds and alerts for a predetermined time an hour, a day or a week.

As with mobile phones, formatting messages using markdown style modifiers is available for WhatsApp on the computer. To add excerpts in bold, place the words in asterisks (for example: * dnetc *). J for italics, use underline (_); for crossed out, tilde (~) text; and for monospaced font, three serious accents (“ '').

In the WhatsApp desktop app, both on Windows and on macOS, some keyboard shortcuts can make browsing easier, especially if you are the type of person used to using keys more than the mouse when moving the computer. There are commands for different functions, such as opening a new conversation, creating a group and switching between chats. On WhatsApp Web, however, these shortcuts don't work. Check out the full list below.

  • Ctrl / Command + N: Start a new conversation
  • Ctrl / Command + Shift + N: Create a group
  • Ctrl / Command + Shift + /: Switch between conversations
  • Ctrl / Command + E: Archive conversation
  • Ctrl / Command + Shift + M: Mute conversation
  • Ctrl / Command + Shift + U: Mark conversation as unread
  • Ctrl / Command + Backspace / Delete: Delete conversation
  • Ctrl / Command + P: Open your profile

Another tip for keyboard ninjas to take advantage of WhatsApp Web and Desktop navigation is supported by the Tab key. The user can move quickly through the messenger features by pressing only Tab and Enter. After starting the software, the first touch selects the search area; then, the most current chat; then, the emoji button; and then the typing field.
