Apple sets price for ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Macs Pro

Switching chipsets to ATI Radeon on new Macs requires Mac OS X 10.5.7

For people who work with graphics, multimedia editing and / or a fan of games, the launch of the new iMacs and Macs Pro earlier today brought a good news: the option to upgrade to ATI Radeon graphics chipsets from the 4000 series.

Along with this, Apple registered the ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit in its online store, an upgrade set for Macs Pro both those of the beginning of 2008 and those announced today. The card features 512MB of GDDR5 memory, uses the PCI Express 2.0 interface and includes a Mini DisplayPort and a dual-link DVI port. The interesting thing is that it is still unavailable and lists Mac OS X 10.5.7 (which has not yet been released) as one of the requirements, as we anticipated.

Customizing purchase options in the Apple Store Online, we also noticed that switching to an ATI Radeon HD 4850 on the iMac makes the machine's delivery time jump from 24 hours to 4-6 weeks (!). On Macs Pro, the upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 indicates a 4-6 business day forecast, which is quite curious.
