Spring began in Brazil and throughout the southern hemisphere at 4:50 am, due to the Equinox phenomenon, which happens when the sun hits the equator directly, causing all areas of the planet to receive the same amount of light. Today, the day and night will last 12 equal hours in the southern and northern hemispheres. Spring runs until December 22, when summer begins.

On the official Doodles page, Google quotes a poem from Chilean Pablo Neruda to celebrate the beginning of the season:

Between the water and the light that unfurls the air / Now the inaugurated spring / Now the seed is aware of its own growth.

Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere

In the Northern Hemisphere, Google celebrates the arrival of the opposite season, Autumn 2019, which also started today. A doodle shows the earth with a dry leaf each on it, surrounded by the word Google, which is made up of yellowish branches and foliage. The figure was used in early fall in Brazil, in March this year.
