Spotify CEO praises Apple’s “openness” after accusing it of monopoly

It has been just over a year since the Spotify publicly opened a complaint against the Apple in which he accused her of anti-competitive practices. More precisely, the streaming Sweden complained about the 30% charge on purchases (including subscriptions) from the App Store – which causes the service subscription price to increase.

In the complaint, Spotify said that Apple applies rules that “purposely limit choice and stifle innovation at the expense of user experience”, and that “acts as a player and referee to deliberately harm other application developers.”

Although Apple countered Spotify’s accusations, the European Union and the American court investigated the case. Although the bureaucratic side of this imbroglio has not come to an end, companies have left the malaise aside to work on the integration between their products, which resulted in the “opening” of some features of Apple’s systems, such as compatibility with Apple. Siri and the launch of Spotify for Apple TV.

Now, in an interview for Bloomberg, the CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, praised Apple’s efforts to make some of its resources available to third parties, saying that the aforementioned measures are “encouraging”.

We are very encouraged that we can finally use Siri as a voice support and also be available for more products, such as Apple TV and Apple Watch, something we haven’t been able to do until recently.

Despite the positive changes, Ek said that “the circumstances of health services streaming music companies still need to improve a lot for Spotify and Apple Music to operate equally. ”

This is moving in the right direction, but we still have many, many steps to follow until Apple is an open and fair platform.

Last February, we reported that Apple would be working on a new feature to allow third-party apps, such as Spotify, to run natively on HomePod, as well as the option to change the default apps on iOS / iPadOS 14 – which would level it up even more. the performance of Apple and its competitors within these systems.
