Special event: Apple aims to reveal the path of technology for the next decade with the iPhone X!

After the presentation of the iPhones 8 and 8 Plus… Tim Cook, Apple CEO, invoked the words “One more thing…” and, as we know, they are not used for nothing – lately, nor have they been used. What Apple wants to do is reveal the path of technology for the next decade. And, for that, it is launching a third smartphone model, the iPhone X (ten, that is, ten in English).

Vertical rear cameras, glass rear and the screen occupying the entire front with the cutout at the top. It is what we know from the leaks. The screen goes up to the four corners of the structure, with glass in the front and back, and as resistant as the iPhone 8. The sides are stainless steel with exquisite and continuous finish with the glass. The phone is also resistant to water and dust at the microscope level, like its brothers.

There is a new screen, the Super Retina display, with 5.8 ″ diagonals (2436 × 1125 pixels; 458 dots per inch of density, the largest on an iPhone). The iPhone X is the first Apple phone to use OLED technology – according to Apple, this delay is explained by the quality of the screen, which only met Apple’s requirements now, in 2017. Phil Schiller, Apple’s head of marketing , cited the benefits of OLED screens until today, but that they had defects that Apple did not accept. The company, however, solved all of that, including brightness and color accuracy.

The screen supports HDR in Dolby Vision and HDR10; the contrast ratio is 1: 1,000,000. In addition, the iPhone X has 3D Touch and True Tone, obviously.

Without the traditional Home button, how do you wake up iPhone X? You can get up to wake up or just touch the screen once. Navigation is now by gesture – to go to the home screen, you swipe from bottom to top and you’re done. And it works across the system (there’s the bar at the bottom of the screen that you slide from bottom to top). For multitasking, you slide and hold a little bit to open the interface and switch between apps. You can call Siri by saying “What’s up Siri?” or by pressing and holding the side button, as expected.

Unlocking the iPhone is a separate chapter. It started ten years ago with the “slide to unlock”; then, the Touch ID. Apple wanted something better, and now you look at it and the device recognizes you. With you, the Face ID! According to Apple, it is the future of how we will unlock our smartphones. All the technology is in the cutout at the top of the screen, a TrueDepth camera system. There is an infrared camera, lighting flood, front camera, spot projector and much, much more technology in that upper section of the iPhone X screen.

Woman using Face ID on iPhone X

Face ID works even in the dark thanks to all these components that work together to recognize the person’s face. A mathematically generated model is compared to the base of your face that you have stored in the device. Everything invisible, automatic and instant. According to Apple, billions of images were used to create neural networks in the creation of Face ID; there is a neural engine on the A11 Bionic chip, it is specialized hardware for specific machine learning algorithms for facial recognition. The neural motor is based on a design dual-core and performs 600 billion operations per second!

You look at the screen and turn your head to set up your face once. Then he learns – even if you change your hair style, put on glasses, hats / caps … it doesn’t matter. He learns who you are! It also adapts over time, as the beard grows for example. According to the company, it is not possible to circumvent it with photos or with 3D masks created by Hollywood professionals. All stored data is stored in the Secure Enclave, as with Touch ID fingerprints. All processing is done locally, that is, nothing is sent to Apple’s servers.

Comparatively speaking, while Touch ID has an error rate of 1 in 50,000 (of someone being able to unlock your device with his fingerprint), that rate jumps to 1 in 1,000,000 of Face ID (if it is a person genetically similar to you , as a twin, this rate is greatly reduced of course). Face ID also works with Apple Pay, just double-click the side button, look at the iPhone X and make the payment. Third-party apps will also be able to integrate with Face ID, as they do today with Touch ID.

IPhone X rear cameras

The cameras on the iPhone X are similar to those on the iPhone 8 Plus, with the telephoto lens going from f / 2.8 to f / 2.4 (best for low light environments). Both cameras now have optical stabilization, which is great! The True Tone flash is now Quad-LED, with 2x more uniform light. Like the iPhone 8 Plus, it supports the new Portrait Lighting mode, 4K video at 60 frames per second and optimization for augmented reality applications. In the front camera there is a TrueDepth with support for Portrait Mode and also for Portrait Lighting mode, making it possible to take incredible photos.

The iPhone X will launch in 64GB and 256GB versions, just like the iPhone 8, starting at $ 1,000. The pre-sale will start on October 27, reaching the market only on November 3. The SE, 6s and 7 iPhones remain in line with lower prices.
