Silent OS X Upgrade Breaks Ethernet Port for Macs Apple publishes fix for issue

If you have a ported Mac Ethernet and uses it for a network connection, you may have noticed that it crashed this week.

Apple has released a silent update for the kernel from OS X (verse 3.28.1) that simply "broke" the Ethernet ports of Macs, generating quite a bit of complaint about it.

Fortunately, the company was also very quick to fix: If your Mac has Wi-Fi internet access, it will automatically download the corrected version 3.28.2. Optionally, you can run sudo softwareupdate –background from Terminal as well.

If you do not have network access, follow the instructions in this Apple support article.
