"Services" category will surpass iPhone as Apple's growth engine over the next five years, says analyst

O iPhone the flagship of Apple. No one would dispute that sentence: since its introduction, more than 11 years ago, the smartphone has been Ma's main source of revenue with a good slack, and its main weapon on the way to becoming the first $ 1 rail company brand that will inevitably be reached sooner or later.

However, the marathon up to 13 digits in the market value may have, in this final part, a different protagonist at least the analyst predicts Katy L. Huberty, from Morgan Stanley.

According to a report published by the Business Insider, over the next five years, Apple's annual revenue growth may be driven primarily by the category "Services", while the iPhone takes third place in the chart: the vice-leader will be in the segment categorized as “Other products” and led by Apple Watch, which, according to the analyst, sees a good growth in the period.

See the chart below:

Apple's revenue growth projection over the next five years, with services leading

Over the past five years, Apple's revenue growth has averaged 8% per year; during this period, the iPhone contributed to 86% this leap, while services were responsible for 23% growth and the category of other products was left with only 3% of the cake. In Huberty's forecast, the period spanning the fiscal years 2017 to 2022 sees a very different scenario, with services accounting for the majority (56%) of revenue growth, the category of other products representing 30% and the iPhone, only 22%.

Huberty estimates that today, Apple's service revenue is in the home of $ 30 per active device (two years ago, the estimate was US $ 25); this number, however, "underestimates the long-term revenue potential" of Ma's services, as some important parts of the segment are in full growth, such as Apple Music, iCloud and Apple Pay. The analyst predicts that, in the not too distant future, each active Apple device will bring more than $ 100 in service revenue.

If the forecasts are correct, we will see an interesting phenomenon in the coming years: Apple will no longer rely on the megalomaniacal launches of iPhones and start to prioritize the experience of using the devices, attracting existing users to subscriptions to services that they do not yet have. have and giving more emphasis to this segment in their keynotes and advertising.

To be, certainly, an Apple very different from the one we know today. We'll see.
