The Area and Distance Meter is a free app for Android phones capable of calculating areas and distances between points on the map. Interested parties can use the tool to take measurements at random points or places where there are no streets, such as in parks or in the rural area. The result displayed on the device takes into account the magnitudes of kilometers for calculating distance and hectares to estimate the total size of an area. The service uses satellite imagery from Google Maps.
In the following tutorial, check out how to use the Area and Distance Meter app. The procedure was performed on a Moto E5 Plus with Android 8.0 Oreo, but the tips also apply to other smartphones with Google’s operating system. Remember that the application is not available for users of iPhone (iOS), Apple.

Step 1. Install the Area and Distance Meter on your phone via the dnetc page. When opening for the first time, you will be asked to access your location. Touch «Allow» to authorize. If you want, use the button in the upper right corner of the screen to change the map display mode;

Step 2. Then, position the map over the location you want to measure the area or distance. Touch the «+» button in the bottom left corner of the screen. In the menu that appears, define between measuring an area or distance;

Step 3. Select the «Manual measurement» option and tap on the map to add the points. If the path is not over the desired location, go over the circle to divide a line in two and move the points. The distance (in kilometers – km) and area (in hectares) are displayed in real time at the top of the screen;

Step 4. If you want, save the calculated area or distance. To do this, tap on the floppy disk icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Enter a name and, if you want, select a group. Finally, tap the floppy button again to save.
