School renamed 'Hell on Earth' on Google Maps

As a joke, a student at a school in England managed to change the name of the institution on Google Maps.

The school, which has the original name "Hornsea School and Language College in East Yorkshire" appeared on the search giant's online mapping service under the new name "Hornsea Priso e Inferno na Terra" (adjusted for Portuguese).

It is possible for anyone to submit name or location changes on the platform. However, they must be checked by the company owner to avoid unauthorized edits.

The school has since issued a statement to parents to say that the name has been changed again.

"We recommend that all schools take ownership of their locations on Google Maps to avoid any undue behavior," warned Professor Steve Ostler.

Although the school has already identified the responsible student, his name has not been released.

"We allow users to provide comprehensive and up-to-date information, but we recognize that there may be occasional inaccuracies," said Google in a statement.

"When that happens, we do our best to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
