Russia accuses Google of promoting illegal events; understand | Internet

The Russian government has notified Google that no video of the events taking place in the country will be broadcast live on social networks. The requirement came from the Russian Federal Office for Communications, Information Technology and Media Supervision (Roskomnadzor). In the statement, Google accused of promoting "illegal mass events".

Reuters, one of the international sites to disclose the information, rated the protest, which took place last Saturday, as the largest in the last eight years. The Russians took to the streets to demand more clarity in the elections. The request came after allegations that names of opposition politicians in the Moscow region would be on a list to prevent them from running for municipal elections. Dissatisfaction, however, came with revolt against the Putin government and the economic crisis facing Russia.

This, however, is not the first time that the Russian government and Google have problems. In 2018, the company was required to pay a $ 7,663 fine after breaching a Roskomnadzor determination. At the time, it was required by law that some results be suppressed in Google search, which did not happen.

Another imbroglio involved an indisposition between Roskomnadzor and Telegram. After the app refuses to decrypt messages exchanged by users, the Russian government has blocked millions of IPs from Google and Amazon, making it impossible to access the internet. It then required the Apple Store and Google Play Store to remove the app from the list available for country downloads.

dnetc contacted Google. The company, however, declined to comment on the matter.

Roskomnadzor demanded that Google stop using YouTube to advertise illegal illegal events in bulk

Roskomnadzor sent a letter to Google asking it to take steps to prevent the promotion of unauthorized (illegal) mass events on the video hosting company YouTube.

According to available information, various YouTube channel structures acquire YouTube advertising tools (such as push notifications) to disseminate information about unauthorized (illegal) mass events, including those intended to disrupt federal and regionally important elections.

At the same time, such "push notifications" are received, including by users who are not subscribed to the YouTube channels of these structures.

If Google does not respond, the Russian Federation considers this as an interference in sovereign state affairs, as well as a hostile influence and obstructing the conduct of democratic elections in Russia, leaving the right to a proper reaction, the letter emphasizes.
