Rumors: iPhone with 6.5 ″ screen will be the same size as the 8 Plus; iOS 12 will allow Face ID unlock horizontally

Much has been said about the possibility of Apple launching three models of iPhones in 2018 with visuals and features based on the iPhone X. Yes, three: one with a 5.8 ″ screen, another with a plus or minus 6.1 ″ and a third giant, with 6.5 ″ screen.

However, this bigger one would not be something so different from what we are used to. And the reason for this is simple: although the screen size is something never seen before in the world of Ma, structurally speaking it would be the same size as the iPhones Plus that we know so much (since the display goes from end to end).

This news is not new, but was corroborated this week by the Japanese website Mac Otakara (who has a good track record of success, even if he hits the ball every now and then).

The novelties they brought to the table were the following: this 6.5 ″ iPhone could be 0.2mm thicker than the iPhone 8 Plus due to the design of the rear camera (which should be vertical and with a double lens, as today in the X). For comparison, the iPhone 8 Plus is 7.5mm thick, while the iPhone X is 7.7mm.

Regarding the direct successor of the iPhone X itself, the website stated that it has the same body / structure, but has a larger lens for the rear camera due to the sensor that increases in size.

Alleged line of iPhones for 2018

And riding the same wave as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Mac Otakara he also believes that the most affordable model (with the most attractive price) will be the intermediate size, countering Mark Gurman's theory (of Bloomberg), which believes in a traditional staircase (with the smallest screen being the entrance, with the least exorbitant price).

The Japanese also believe that this intermediate iPhone will come with an LCD screen instead of OLED and have a front camera with Face ID nothing new here. The difference from the information coming from Japan is that the phone would have a 6 ″ screen (instead of 6.1 ″) and that the rear camera would be “simple” and not double as the one we have today on the iPhone 8.

Finally, they bet that the iOS 12 come with something very useful that I particularly miss today: Face ID unlock with the device horizontally. Nowadays, you necessarily need to have the iPhone in an upright position (that is, with the phone standing) for facial recognition to happen.

Since Apple intends to incorporate the TrueDepth camera into future iPad Pro (and on tablets everything basically has to work in both orientations), it all makes a lot of sense. The good part of this story is that this unlock feature with Face ID horizontally would not depend on any new hardware, that is, the millions of iPhones X that are already in the hands of users have everything to work that way, too. 😀
