Rumor: devices launched on the 12th may be called "iPhone 8", "iPhone 8 Plus" and "iPhone Edition" [atualizado: “iPhone X”?]

We have been used, for years, to obtain advance information about new iPhones before their official launches. Many hit the bull's-eye, others later proved to be stuck and were not necessarily “invented” or something like that, they may just be plans changed by Apple.

However, one thing that hardly leaks out before the official announcements are the names of the products. This year, the consensus so far that we will see in the special event of the next 12 new devices: the “iPhone 7s”, the “iPhone 7s Plus” and the “iPhone 8”.

But it may be that Apple follows a somewhat unexpected path with respect to these nomenclatures. O 9to5Mac is at IFA, in Berlin (Germany), and talked with some big, but not-named manufacturers of cases for iPhones who claimed to have obtained information directly from China about the names chosen by Ma:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone Edition

Breaks of paradigms will not be missing this year, starting with the launch of three devices flagship with a more expensive model than the standard, adopting OLED technology, new design with the screen occupying the entire front part, the return of the glass backs, exchange of the Touch ID for an advanced 3D facial recognition, wireless charging and by the way .

I say this because it does not help us to look at the past, here, in order to analyze whether this rumor makes sense or not. Looking at the present, what makes me believe in those names that calling the first two models “7s” could be very, very damaging to them marketplace speaking. And, like it or not, we are talking about devices that should also receive a glass rear with wireless recharge, that is, it would be a little bigger than we are used to in “single” upgrades.

The name “iPhone Edition” first surfaced in early March, brought by the Japanese website MACBlog, and it makes more sense to me than calling it “iPhone Pro”, for example. This nomenclature would give an idea that it would be a device intended for a specific audience, which is not the case. We are talking about a commemorative iPhone for ten years, with new design and technologies that “justify” (put more quotes a) a higher price in this launch.

Also abandoning a numerical suffix in this new top-of-the-line device, Apple may be taking the first step towards finally killing those numbers in the names of the iPhone line for good. In 2018, we will be able to see the arrival of only new "iPhone" and "iPhone Plus" considering that, yes, they have already started to paint rumors about a new model with 6.46 "screen for next year.

But in the end, of course, it doesn't matter to us. It's just names. 😁

Citing own sources, the Dutch website iCulture today corroborated the idea of the “iPhone 8” and “iPhone 8 Plus”, but believes that the third model will be "IPhone X" (probably alluding to the tenth anniversary of the smartphone). We'll see.
