Rumor: Apple would have discarded AMOLED screens on iPad 2 due to component shortages

Indications that Apple will continue to use LCDs in the second generation of the iPad have been coming since last week, despite rumors that have emerged this year (1, 2) have opened the possibility for adoption of AMOLED screens.

Today, once again, the DigiTimes pretty much ruled out that possibility for the iPad 2.

Citing information obtained from Asian suppliers, the vehicle claims that there is a general shortage of components, and this limited stock of AMOLED screens may have cut off all of Apple's plans to adopt the technology on its tablet at least for now.

The production of AMOLEDs in China and Taiwan is growing, but still does not match the level produced by Samsung Mobile Display in South Korea, leader in the world. Her demand for manufacturers like Nokia and HTC is already huge, however.

Low production means high costs, of course. This makes it impossible, today, to mass produce AMOLED screens from 7 to 11 inches at affordable prices, such as those that Apple works with suppliers of TFT-LCD panels. AMOLED on the iPad, if it ever comes, it's probably only in 2012.
