REVIEW: Dell G5 Notebook PC (1660Ti) is the perfect device for e-Sports

THE Dell, known for its office computers and focused on productivity, has invested heavily in its line Gamer. Since 2016, Dell Alienware are officially launched in Brazil, and the Notebook Dell G5 shows the company's competence in this segment. We tested the version of the notebook equipped with the graphics card GeForce 1660Ti Max-Q, and the result was very positive, placing the Dell G5 as one of the best options on the market for professional e-Sports players.

Construction and design

The notebook Dell G5 has a bold and beautiful design. In black, it weighs approximately 2.84 kg and has matte details on the top. When you open it, the 15.6 inches incredibly beautiful, and the quality of the screen is in fact one of the high points of the device. On the outside we have a matte finish that looks like metal, but made of resistant plastic.

The notebook comes equipped with an American standard keyboard, backlit by RGB, and with splash resistance. There is a numeric keypad, the touchpad pattern is just below the space bar and works very well. In addition to playing, I wrote a lot, and the ergonomics of Dell G5 one of the highlights.

Dell G5Connections distributed between the side and the rear of the device create a more harmonious look

On the sides it has ventilation spaces, connections and speakers, which blend with beautiful design lines, giving a premium appearance to the notebook. Talking about connections, there are 3 USB 3.1 ports, being a second generation port with DisplayPort, an HDMI 2.0b port, a P2 audio input, and an SD card input. The doors are distributed between the rear and the sides, and give a cohesive look to the device. Internally there are still 2 M.2 slots, for SSD and Intel Optane.

The ventilation system of the Dell G5 in the quietest and at the time when maximum performance was required, he was able to compete with the noise of the desktop that was in the same room. Fortunately it seems that the noise is synonymous with efficiency and I did not feel the device heat up more than it should.

Screen

Dell G5Notebook equipped with GeForce 1660Ti, ensuring high gaming performance

O Dell G5 has a 15.6-inch Full HD (19201080 pixels) LED screen with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, ensuring excellent image quality, especially for games. The panel also has 300 Nits luminance, which guarantees a high quality brightness, mainly combined with the anti-reflective screen, ensuring total visibility even in bright environments.

The 144Hz rate combined with the response time of 9ms guarantees excellent performance for the most hardcore players. Games like Overwatch, Gears5 and CS: GO they did very well even at higher frame rates, without that phantom effect of movement. The Dell G5 is excellent for competitive starts.

Hardware / Performance

Dell G5The Geforce GTX 1660Ti allows the player to use the highest settings in their games

O Dell G5 that we tested equipped with a video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti Max-Q, Intel processor Core i7 9750H 9 generation, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB of SSD in M.2 format. With these configurations, the notebook is able to run the most recent games without choking and crashes, in graphic configurations in Alto.

Games that demand more from the processor than just the graphics card, such as Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and Monster Hunter World, ran at the highest settings, keeping the frame rate always above 60FPS. Gears5 it was the title that required more than 1660Ti, locking at 30FPS with graphics on Ultra, or running at 60FPS with options in Alto mode.

If you like e-sports, Overwatch, League of Legends, CS: GO and Rainbow Six Siege ran very well, reaching rates above 100FPS even in higher graphic configurations, putting the Dell G5 as an excellent option for professional players.

As there is a version of Dell G5 with the RTX 2060, if you want to run games with the best graphics options and the highest performance, it may be interesting to invest a little more in the version with a better graphics card.

Keyboard / Trackpad

Dell G5 notebook and its RGB keyboard

The keyboard Dell G5 in mechanics, as expected from a recently released gaming notebook. However, its ergonomics is a huge point. Its keys are well spaced, and it does not have that classic problem of typing more than one key at the same time, or pressing the wrong key because of poor positioning. Typing on it for a long time is very comfortable, and there is a good support space for your hands.

The response time is very high, and it will not disturb you when it comes to holding the traditional Quick Time Events in games. The trackpad is very accurate, and does not perform those ghostly clicks when we accidentally touch the wrist. The numeric keypad can be a differentiator for some consumers, with a good space next to the traditional keyboard.

The keyboard also features RGB backlighting, which can be customized on the Alienware control panel.

Sound, Camera and Microphone

One of the things that surprised me positively in the Dell G5 was its sound quality. We often see several notebooks leaving the factory with audio subscriptions from large companies like Dolby, AKG, and the like, presenting sound quality as a differential. O Dell G5 it doesn't bring any of that in its box or even in its advertisements, but the audio quality is incredible!

It has two stereo speakers that are on the front of the device. Both are very tall, clean, and have a quality bass. I played a good part of the “Gears5” campaign using the speakers and the immersion they brought me was great. Of course, nothing compares to playing using headsets with multiple channels, but we usually don't see audio quality as good on notebooks.

The simple webcam, shoots in HD, and records at up to 1280 x 720 (HD) at 30 fps. If you want to do streaming, can be used with good ambient lighting.

The microphone is also simple, reducing noise, and eliminates the need for an external microphone even for audio and video calls.

Completed

O Dell G5 1660 Ti an excellent option for notebook gamer in the national market. It brings a beautiful design, combined with good specifications and a 144Hz screen, with a good amount of brightness and a quality contrast. If you are looking for a device for e-Sports, this is one of the best options, and even for less casual games it can serve you well, mainly because of its processor. However, if you want a perfect experience in heavier games, it may be better to choose the most expensive version, equipped with the RTX 2060.

If you are a content creator, or want a big notebook for work, it is worth the investment of R $ 7,319.00.
