Apple wants to take its films to the Oscars; "Thor: Ragnarok" director will lead series

We are less than two weeks away from the event that (apparently) will officially reveal the platform of original series and films from Apple.

Expectations for Apple’s entry into a completely unexplored segment are high – as are the ambitions of the Cupertino giant itself.

Take for example this report published today by Bloomberg: According to sources close to the subject, Apple is hiring a series of «award strategists» – that is, professionals specialized in conducting campaigns and organizing exhibitions of films and series for critics and influential people in the field.

The intention, of course, is to take the Apple to the main Hollywood awards, Oscar (in the case of films) or the Emmy (series).

Well-known figures in the field are being brought together by Apple: the company would have already hired a very experienced professional who spent the last few years in the television division of the Walt Disney Company.

The idea now is to find a specialist who will oversee the entire process.

Apple’s idea, according to the sources, is to be at the Emmy already in 2020 – which would certainly help to attract even more prestige to its platform and facilitate the hiring of even more Hollywood medallions for functions in front and behind the cameras. .

In a related note, the same report corroborates information previously speculated that Apple will offer part of its original content for free, while another portion would be made available only through a monthly subscription, the value of which has not yet been revealed.

Taika Waititi

Speaking of medallions, one recently signed a contract with Apple. Taika Waititi, director of «Thor: Ragnarok» and considered one of the most promising names in comedy today, will lead «Bandidos do Tempo» – series that adapts the 1981 eponymous film, which we have already talked about here.

Taika Waititi

The information is The Wrap and they couldn’t be more appropriate: the crazy tone and non-sense Terry Gilliam’s original film is very close to Waititi’s style.

As we have already mentioned, the series will revolve around an 11-year-old boy who, with the help of six time-traveling dwarfs, strolls through the ages of humanity and encounters a series of historical figures, such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Robin Hood.

Waititi will write and direct the series’ pilot, as well as serve as executive producer with Dan Halsted and Terry Gilliam himself.

Promising, isn’t it?

RTL Group

Meanwhile, Apple is moving closer to other media giants to expand its empire inside and outside the United States.

Recently, RTL Group Europe’s largest production and transmission company – revealed to be under discussion with streaming, like Apple, for possible partnerships.

The information is deadline.

RTL is the parent company of Fremantle, producer behind some of the most successful reality shows of the last decades, such as «American Idol» and “America’s Got Talent”.

Despite this, there is no indication that these brands would transfer to Apple’s service – probably, an Apple deal with RTL would involve only original productions, especially fictional.

There is still no more information about this possible partnership, but we will keep an eye out.

Finally, as the Hollywood Reporter, Apple gave the green light for the production of the first season, of eight episodes, of «Pachinko», series based on the book of the same name by Min Jin Lee that we have already discussed here.

Pachinko, Min Jin Lee's novel that will be adapted in series by Apple

The series is described as a generational epic that will tell the story of four generations of a South Korean family who emigrate to Japan, moving between the largest universities and the country’s criminal underworld.

Min Jin Lee will serve as an executive producer, and producer Soo Hugh will act as the main screenwriter and showrunner.

There is still no information about the release date of «Pachinko».
