Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 processor comes with everything to fight the A13 Bionic

Yesterday, we spoke briefly here about the announcement of the new processors of Qualcomm, O Snapdragon 865 it's the 765. So far, however, we did not have much detail about the chips beyond the information pertaining to the 5G; Now, the manufacturer has released several other details about them and, in relation to the most powerful of the two, we can say that we have a formidable rival to the processor A13 Bionic of the latest iPhones.

Direct successor to the Snapdragon 855, which equipped almost every flagships of the Android world in 2019, the new SoC (System-on-a-Chip) Qualcomm will do the same with the most powerful handsets of 2020; To do so, it focuses on three essential aspects: performance, artificial intelligence and low energy consumption.

We have here eight coresbeing a high performance (Cortex A77 of 2.84GHz), three of average performance (Cortex A77 of 2.42GHz) and four of energy saving (Cortex A55 of 1.8GHz). They are capable of delivering up to 20% higher performance over the same gain predecessors achieved by the integrated GPU, a Adreno 650, which can manage QHD + displays at up to 144Hz (signaling that by 2020 we will even have the tendency for panels with higher refresh rates).

Snapdragon 865 supports the Bluetooth 5.1 and to Wi-Fi 6, in addition to being able to record videos on 8K(!) at 30 frames per second or 4K at 120 frames per second, plus ultra-slow-motion (960 fps) video at 720p, no time limit. Note that the chip still has the same 7-nanometer architecture as last year (and similar to A13 Bionic).

Regarding the Snapdragon 765, we also have plenty of firepower here to power intermediate smartphones. It also has eight cores, but only two high performance and six low power; the GPU Adreno 620, which brings a 20% performance gain over the Snapdragon 730.

It is worth noting that Qualcomm also presented a variant of SoC, the Snapdragon 765G, focused on games and more complex graphic experiences. It has the same cores as its “ordinary” brother, but the built-in GPU that the same Adreno 620 has improved and can perform 38% better than Snapdragon 730. Both 765 and 765G chips have radio. 5G integrated, unlike 865 (as we spoke yesterday).

The first smartphones equipped with Qualcomm's new chips are expected to hit the market in early 2020; We may already see the presentations of some of them at the next CES (in January) or at MWC (in February). Cool, isn't it?

5G on iPhone “as fast as possible”

While developing chips for the Android world, Qualcomm also collaborates with Apple at least for now on developing the infamous 5G modem whereas it seems that equipping 2020 iPhones. In statement PCMag at the Snapdragon Tech Summit conference today, Qualcomm's president, Cristiano Amon, stressed that this partnership is of paramount importance to the company.

According to the executive, who is Brazilian, the development of the 5G modem with the Ma “number one priority” in the relationship of the two companies, at this moment, so that the 5G iPhones are launched as soon as possible. Ammon regretted, however, that the legal conflicts between the companies had so far removed them, otherwise the collaboration could have started much earlier and borne fruit much earlier.

We have a multi-year deal with Apple. Not just one or two, it's multiple years for our Snapdragon modem. () We return to our collaboration probably later than both of us (Apple and Qualcomm) would like, and I would say we have worked together to try to make the most of it, as well as make the most of what they did before, to launch a smartphone. with 5G on time.

Amon said he is happy with the progress made so far, but has not specified expectations or dates for anything. That is, the 2020 iPhone with 5G still live but the process seems to be frantic.

Just think the executive should remember that Apple does not have a very favorable story to "outsiders" commenting on their future plans. Something tells me that today's statement does not quite reach the ears of Tim Cook and company
