Photo taken with an iPhone 6 wins annual photo contest

If there is one thing that has evolved a lot in recent years is the smartphone camera. By 2019, we have seen the arrival of three-lens devices, with incredible zoom and even capable of taking great pictures in very low light conditions. This evolution is so big that even “older” handsets still make it beautiful.

Want an example? The nonprofit organization Friends of Columbia Gorge, based in Portland (Oregon, United States), announced the winners of its fourth annual photography contest this week.

In it, people were invited to submit photos in five categories (cultural, scene, wildflowers, wildlife and young photographer). The winning image was taken by Colleen Wright (from Oregon) on September 3, 2018 with a iPhone 6!

The photo was recorded on the Nick Eaton Ridge Trail, an area hit by a big fire in 2017.

The jury described the photo as follows: “This moody image evokes both the devastation of the Eagle Creek fire and hints at the resilience of the forest, as the sun cutting through the mist and the green patches revealed on the slope's ground cover. The fantastic lighting in the photo just sums up the resilience of nature in general and George in particular. ”

Below are the winners of all categories (cultural, scene, wildflower, wildlife and young photographer, respectively):

Contest winners received gift certificates from sponsor Pro Photo Supply and a Columbia Sportswear backpack; they also won a large copy of their respective photos and were invited to the Friends of the Columbia Gorge Annual Meeting and Lunch as guests.

In addition, the winning photos and honorable men will be framed and displayed during May May at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. All framed photos will be for sale and the profits will be used to maintain the organization. In total, Friends of the Columbia Gorge received 352 photos for review.
